Hi fellas!!

im writting from upland Ca. socal

thinking about getting 5 chicks in the spring. The zoning code allows up to 5 chickens kept as pets, but doesnt give much more information than that.

I called the city and they were remarkably unhelpful.... noone knows anything about chickens (...being fair, chicken questions are probably not among top five questions lol!). :)

The police department referred me to animal control, but animal control doesnt return my calls (called twice).

hows everyone doing with chickens in upland? any problems? any advice? any laws i should know? anyone had problems with neighbors?

im very excited about it!!. it will be a great surprise for kids!! ;)

Hey there! Upland is in one of the Newcastle quarantine counties. Check with CDFA before telling the kids you're getting chicks. There might be a moratorium for a bit. This is a serious outbreak.

Hi everyone! I've been lurking for a long time while wishing for chickens, and finally my wonderful husband built me a chicken coop for Christmas this year. I'm wondering about good reputable places to buy chicks in the north San Diego county/south western Riverside county area? I don't really want to mess with mail ordering on my first go-round, especially since I'm starting with a small number. Suggestions?

Amelia Egghart - hello fellow Fallbrook-ian! This winter has been crazy, hasn't it? My garden is definitely not complaining about the rain though.

Heard on the news about migratory water fowl dying - ducks mainly - having an Avian Cholera outbreak at the Salton Sea. Anyone know anything more? And what the heck is Avian Cholera?

Hey there! Stay away from riverside/San Bernadino/LA counties. There's a serious outbreak of Newcastle disease in those counties and they're having mandatory euthanasia of all poultry. Are you in Fallbrook? There's a Facebook group called Fallbrook Chickens & Farm you can join. The local feed stores should start selling chicks in February. If you're looking for teenage and adult birds, I highly recommend Vista Country Feed. We're in a mareck's disease area so make sure your birds are either vaccinated or from resistant, local stock. You can get lots of local info from the FB group. Be sure to read up on Newcastle! And practice biosecurity, this is an intense time for diseases right now.

And hi! I go to Fallbrook Feed and Fertilizer frequently so maybe see you there!

Yep, I'm in Fallbrook, I'll have to check out the FB group. I usually drool over the chick days sign at the Feed and Fertilizer but I wasn't sure when they start selling them or if it's a good place to buy (before the coop, husband always drove me by and said "nope, look away!" lol). I generally just go there occasionally for straw or dog stuff. I had no idea Vista Country Feed sold teen/adult birds - do they have them year round or is there a certain time to look? Something to consider.

Thank you so much for the great information. I've been reading up as much as possible on diseases and pretty much anything I can get my eyes on, but you can never know too much. Thanks again.
