I can envision that pretty picture!

Do you run all the roosters/hens together? Coop together?

I have all large fowl (some walking flowers). Overtime, I think it could be nice to downsize to bantams.

I had two breeding cages separated earlier, the eggs are in the incubator and 3 hens setting. The rest are now running together. I also raise a flock of large fowl Orpington's, Brahmas and Black Copper Marans for their eggs to eat. I donate the xtra eggs from both Bantams and Large Fowl to a Church group that makes Lunch/Brunch 5 days a week for people in their neighborhood that could use a hot meal. I also donated 13 dozen Large eggs to the Church for their upcoming Easter Breakfast. I will eventually raise just Bantams but for now I enjoy both.

It's great that you can run all the roosters/hens together. So much easier for housing etc. Do you think you could combine that many roosters/hens together if they were large fowl?

Reading through your list it doesn't look like you have any Jubilee Orpington's?

I can imagine that your extra eggs are much appreciated. Thanks for helping others.

I need to update my list in my signature. I have some Jubilee, Lemon Cuckoo, Lavender and Red LF Orpingtons just set in the Incubator.

I love giving away as apposed to selling my eggs as it helps people out and I am not in the chickens for money just pleasure. Of course I do not give away to people who are Breeding for a profit though.

Are you breeding your Marans?

Glad to know you have more walking flowers =) How does the feather quality of the Lemon and Lavendar Orps compare to the others? I have a lavendar Ameraucana that is very fluffy but his tail feathers are a little more frazzled than typical.

No I am not breeding my Large Fowl just have hens right now. Have some young LF Orpingtons and Brahma Roosters/Cocks chicks growing up that I will put in with them later this year but for now the big girls have a break. The Lavender always have iffy feather quality. Lemon Cuckoo Orpington are not hatched yet I used to have some a few years ago. I have a Lemon Splash LF Cochin and she has real good feather quality.

Hey folks! I'm in central oc and would like to know if anyone has any leads on hatching eggs for really dark marans/wellsummer or blrw eggs? They're not for show or anything, just for my egg basket.

Hello All,

I live in Mira Mesa and just got three 5 week old chicks on Saturday. One Rhode Island Red, one Black Star and one Gold Star. First time chicken owner here :) I bought a Hen Haven Chicken Coop for them http://www.midwesthomes4pets.com/products/hen-haven-chicken-coop

So far I keep them in a plastic tub in the kitchen.

The coop is open on the bottom. Is it necessary to enclose the bottom part to keep predators out and if so what is the recommended method? I read that it isn't good for the chickens to stand on chicken wire so I guess you would have to burrow it somehow?

Anyways, hello from Mira Mesa. Glad I found this place =)

You could also do an apron. Hardware cloth done flat on the ground around the base of the coop. this would keep a dog from digging in.

Great place for sure and

Hi and welcome, thanks for posting. Fending off predators and having a safe coop are essential.

@perchie.girl has a good suggestion for perimeter protection.

I looked at your coop and you might consider placing it on garden ties. If you use 6x6 garden ties around the perimeter of the coop, and maybe at any central dividers, the wood coop will last longer and you can secure the coop to the garden ties for stability. It also acts as a curb to keep the interior of the coop/run drier.

In this application, I usually flatten out an area for the garden ties so everything sits level, and then secure predator resistant wire to the inside/bottom of the garden ties before the coop is attached above. This provides for a good 5+ inches of fill area above the wire floor. Alternately, the wire could just be attached to the perimeter of the coop/garden ties as suggested by perchie.girl .

Please share your chick pics next =)
