Oh no! How did I miss that you lost Phaedra?! I'm so sorry :( she was such a little love. I hope you can find someone to fill that void. I'll be a mess when I lose Amelia, even though she just uses me got food and something to wipe her face on after eating snails :) having a little independently minded fluff like that choose to follow you around and be close of her own free will is something special. I'm sorry.

This time of year yes! Probably the Coopers Hawk as that is what is usually around here in the Fall and also back in the Spring.
I think this is a cooper hawk???? One of this one's parents killed 2 of my silkies in 1 strike. We'd been lucky up until then. So, we closed the silkies into their coop area until we could cover their run.....well this young hawk decided to crawl in through a small gap in the fence. He killed one. He couldn't get out. So, my brother trapped it, they took photos, then let it go. It still hangs out in the big trees in my front yard. (We fixed the gap in the silkie pen). We have seen a decrease in gophers and squirrels in the area. I"m hoping that's what they are eating.

TY -- Yep, we lost Phaedra AND our beautiful Blue Wheaten Ameraucana to heat-related issues this summer.
Meanwhile, we've been enjoying our newest Breda juvenile, a Cuckoo, who is very anxious to fully integrate with the snotty and aloof Silkies! She already follows us around outdoors -- if she loses sight of us she'll come running to find us. Breda are such sociable easy-going birds. Very docile and good around timid breeds like Silkies, Favies, Ameraucanas, etc.

Awesome yet scary at the same time! Many times our resident Cooper's will sit on a telephone pole, the lawn furniture, or on the fence to watch our birds sometimes just 5 feet away from a hiding hen. But our girls have had 6 yrs experience keeping out of its clutches! Plus we keep lots of shelters around the yard for the hens to hide. The Cooper's don't seem to want confrontation on the ground with its prey but prefers to swoop down with talons on running hens, so we've eliminated a lot of that open atmosphere from the yard with shelters, dog houses, canopies, container plants, compost bin, city trash barrel, lawn furniture, benches, etc etc. Before it died we had a climbing thorny rose bush the girls would hide under. The rose bushes are not only thorny for hiding but also take our drought better than other plants.

Thank you to whoever recommended dr z in Duarte/Azusa! Went there today to check on my hen that I thought had sour crop. He's so knowledgeable from working in the poultry industry and so nice too! First visit is free but normally only $40.
Last week we took are other hen to the exotic animal vet in Pasadena. So many expensive tests and antibiotics. We left with a $403 bill to treat a little swelling above her eye. Ugh.

THANK U for the gold star for Dr. Z! I have gone to Exotic Animal Care and yes they are very $$$$$. So glad to hear that there is someone out there that doesn't charge an arm & leg :celebrate
