California-Southern

What zone are you? I'm in 10b and have lots of blueberries! Southern Highbush varieties grow here.

Can Southern Highbush handle 100+ degree direct sun for continuous weeks during summer? I don't want to start using mesh to shade them. Even my tomato plants can't handle the temps once it hits the high 90's and 100's for several weeks in a row like last year. I already have to mesh cover my tomatoes in these recent increasing temps. By August most of the tomato plants get diseased or parasites from the brutal summer. I keep some tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, and peppers in container pots so I can roll them into shade during brutal heatwaves but then the humidity kicks in and I'm battling mildew and bugs I won't use chemicals/poisons on the plants and organic treatments are a losing battle in the long run. Citrus type trees like grapefruit, lemons, and pomegranates have been my hardiest bush trees so far.

Costco has those big, triangle sail shades. Seems like one of those would fit your yard well, plus have more overhead shade for the chickies!

Nope, not so! Last night Santa Ana winds ripped my Coleman canopy to shreds! OMG how I HATE wind -- breeze ok, wind NOT! It's a good thing I took down the glass Hummingbird feeders before they smashed to the ground -- I usually hang the feeders under the canopy. Living against the SGV mountains gives us terrible weather patterns - ridiculous heatwaves, humidity, flooding, and canyon winds. Sometimes winds are so bad it blows over my heavy container pots.

LAST WEEK.

THIS MORNING!

THE BRIDAL TULLE I USE TO WRAP THE RAISED GARDEN BEDS STAYED SURPRISINGLY INTACT!

Thanks for the information on the plant. I was waffling between Blackberries or Blueberries -- decided I don't want thorn-type bushes.
They grow Southern Highbush at the Temecula Berry Co. That place gets crazy hot. They're just north of me and their temperatures are horrible.http://www.temeculaberryco.com

Hey all,

I am an aspiring chicken owner but wanted to make sure I have all my chicks in a row before I take the plunge. My first concern is whether or not I can actually have them. I live in Whittier, which looks like it's an apparent no-go, but I live in an area that is considered unincorporated LA county, which, if I'm not mistaken, is what guides me. There was a thread here about Whittier, but it seems to be a little unknown, so I was hoping someone had a better idea on which rules I need to follow.

Hi! All you have to do is contact City Hall and ask about the zoning codes for your address. Don't give up IF they scratch their heads with: I DUNNO. U can also go online to find zoning codes for Whittier. Good Luck. ALSO: if yer neighbors like chickens U can prolly sneak em in regardless.
Yes, I am a terrible enabler ;)

Someone very close to me grew up in what is known as South Whittier, unincorporated part of LA County. His neighbors had chickens for years! This is in the area near Florence and Carmenita. Idk if it is legal or not, but people DO have chickens there.
