Thank you for the info! I placed the chick in the nest box last night, and all has gone well so far.
It has been 3 weeks since I introduced the chick, and all is going well! Looks like a hen, right?

I'm glad that the move worked out so well. What breed is the chick? For a hen, that red comb seems to be roo-ish. I hope it's a pullet!!!

For my move, I had a coop with my bully Polish hens, plus the 55 flowery and Silverudd Blue pullets I haven't sold yet, plus a few bantams. One silkie, one frilkie and one Seabright that are broody (typical bantams). I had a much smaller grow out coop with a bunch of maran, silverudd blue, a 55, a BLRW and a few mystery chicks that are 4 to5 months old. I moved them into the bigger pen. At least 8 of them, I have to physically move out of the coop and lock them out for a few hours to get them to eat and drink. It's not going well. Even though I added 10 plus birds, and nobody is getting picked on excessively, they are unwilling to tangle with the other birds. I'm hoping a couple days of forcing them together will solve the problem. The BLRW is actually the biggest bird in the pen, but she is the most scared.

7 of these birds - a mix from both pens should be going to a new house this week. Hopefully that mix up will help.

Some breeds are easier to sex than others. To me, it's easier to sex chicks when you have multiple of the breed. I had 3 Barnvelders hatch a few months ago. 2 had tails really early, 2 got combs a lot faster. So, I figure I have 2 boys, 1 girl. Now that they are a lot older, I'm positive I have 2 boys, 1 girl. When you only have 1, it's harder to be sure. But you can search for sexing Leghorn chicks. I found this one and everyone said the top left is a boy and the 2 lower are girls in these 5 week old leghorns.

Uh oh. Looks like I may have a little roo. Ugh. If so, I’ll need to find a home for him. Jessimom, care for a Leghorn roo?

Sorry! My city bans roos, so I'm always rehoming the ones I hatch. There are 2 feed stores near me that will take them. There is a guy that feeds his family with donated roosters, and there is a hill, called rooster hill that people dump their roos - someone feeds and waters them, but they are usually taken by the wildlife. I think there are some that have been there for more than a year. So, depends on how smart they are. I would say call your local feed stores, and see if they can take him. Good luck!!

This SoCal Thread looks rather inactive! Anyone still out there in SoCal? I have had many flocks throughout my life, and now am beginning again, very small this time. I just got three chicks today: black australorp, buff orpington, and an olive egger. I live in Riverside and it is hot here. . . have a VERY secure coop where I would like to let my little girls roam soon. . . what is the minimum age to let them live outside (with a heat lamp of course. . .the nights are cool still).
