Jandrusrn--

I know this is my first post.  I've been on this website for months researching and reading.  I bought 10 chickens from a local breeder, straight run.  It looks like 7 of them are roos :(

They are all 5 weeks old and I am looking to add to my flock so I have at least 10 eventually.  I have a huge coop and enclosed run.

Where are you located?

I am in Central California on the Coast.

With appreciation,

karen borges

Hi Karen and :welcome go post until you have 10 posts so you can show pictures of your babies. You really think they are all roos???? IF so is the breeder willing to help you out? What breeds did you get? Thats krazy that all would be roos......

Hi,

I'm pretty sure about 6 of them....I have 2 Barnevelders (both look to be roos, they have red combs), 4 Buff Orpingtons (3 Roos--big red combs), and 4 Rhode Island Reds (2 probable roos). I've been reading the gender forum like crazy and to me, they look like Roos (behavior as well). We'll see though. I do want to post pictures. I will post them tomorrow to see what everyone thinks.

I took pictures of our "barn" today as well. We converted a barn shed (premade) into a chicken coop. Added on a run. We've worked on it for over a month and it's finally done. I even have a built in brooder out there as well (under the roost).

The breeder is not willing to take any back. I am going to call him tomorrow though to make sure. He told me he wouldn't when I bought them unfortunately...

Bad luck on all the roos unfortunately...my husband thinks I need to be more patient.

I can understand your problem. My first experience two decades ago was a straight run purchase from McMurrary's Hatchery. Out of 26 chicks, only 6 were hens. I raised all of them until they began fighting and gave the excess males away to some one who processed them. Now I order pullets if I buy from a hatchery. A hatchery may give credit for excess roosters but I did not know enough then to ask.

Raising poultry is certainly not as simple as one thinks but it does get a lot easier if you can be patient and build your flock slowly. In your case the breeder may have been taking advantage of you if he knew that your are unexperienced. What breeds are the females and do you have a male of the same breed. Welcome to the world of chickens lovers anonymous. Actually we are not so anonymous but we are sort of addicted.

Hi - I was hoping some fellow San Diegans out there might have some recommendations for me... I have a basic plan for the coop I need built, but the person who was going to help me with it is now unable to commit to it. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for someone who may be out of work or who would like a weekend project for some extra money? I am located in the Del Mar area, and I was hoping to get this project going ASAP (my girls just turned 4-weeks yesterday, and need their house!) Please feel free to PM me with contact info if preferred.

Thank you so much in advance!

Hello Southern Californians! There is a pair of American Buff geese in the Northern Los Angeles area who are in need of a good home with caring owners. The gander is 8 years old and from Holderread's, and the female goose is 4 years old and from Metzer Farms. The owners just don't have as much time to care for them anymore and would like to see them go to a wonderful new place to live with green grass, a place to swim and loving caretakers.

Here is the original thread on the subject with more information: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/698648/pair-of-american-buff-geese-in-need-of-good-home

If you would like to offer these geese a wonderful and loving home, please send me a pm.

Thank you

I live near the West Covina Mall near the 605 fwy and the 10 fwy . I have a variety of different birds in my back yard. If you have turkeys or pheasants send me a PM so we can talk a bit more. I have quite a lot of chickens and would like to sell some or maybe even trade. The roosters grow up to be somewhat big and get a lot of color. Check out my pictures. Thanx

I'm also looking for peacocks. If you or someone you know has them and is looking to sell a female or trade her, let me know. I prefer local pickups, it saves on shipping and you know the birds will arrive safe =) thanx!
