I'm in Modesto. I didn't know that place existed. Thanks for the info!

Walt is right. If you see one there are more. A few years ago we were battling rats and the only thing that works is Liqua-Tox. You can't just buy this, a pest control company has to bring it to you in bait boxes. We keep ours filled with bait and thankfully never see rats.

Every time they till the fields here all the rodents move into my place, so I have to keep on top of it. What I have learned through the years is this: If you see evidence of mice, you probably don't have a rat infestation. If you don't see mice, you have a lot of rats. Rats love to eat mice. Here is my rat control......that is a rat in her mouth, this Shamo hen is 9 lbs and tall.

Quote: I found liqua-Tox online and it looks like they will sell it to me. The bag looks like the one I have for Corid! The place will sell me a special bait station too.

It is probably one of those things that will pop up saying they can't ship it to CA...

Ah, one of the reasons I built all my coops elevated. Nothing can hide out under them but chickens! Gives us extra shade, weather protection and extra run space.

2nd on that, Upside is that they do get a lot of share from the coop downside is its hard to get them out if they are skittish, I use a broom. Also, depending how you build them, they are a bit harder to clean, but i only clean them out twice a year...which I'm due for anytime now :(

I'm so mad. I went out this morning to do some work and the first thing I found was my FBCM pullets laying in the pen. It looks like they piled last night and got them both. Figures. I got 3 to hatch out of 2 dozen Bev Davis eggs and one was very weak, so lost it right away. These girls have been outside for months and just transfered them and now this. I wanna cry. I used to have FBCM chicks running out of my ears and these days I lose them.

On another note, I have a hatch going on the last 3 or 4 days. I'm hoping it's the last batch of quail eggs I set and then realized the rooster wasn't. duh My SPPR broody kept smashing chicks as they tried to hatch and a couple of eggs were added to her nest. When I had checked there was another half hatched chick dead, so I grabbed the last 2 eggs out and stuck them in the bator. One of those hatched this morning.

Back to the yard. I really need to figure out how to kill some tree stumps. What a pain.
Wolftracks, Ever since I complained I didn't have any FCBM's hatching I have them comming out of my ears. Let me know if you want some babies. Or boys! I have 2 4 week olds that have combs and wattles that are HUGE! We call em Gauis and Manliness.

We have a rat zapper. I don't know how may it will catch at once, but it works. Using borax ( don't put this where your chickens can get it) in something they will eat works too, it will kill them but not things that eat them, irrc. I'll check with DH later. its supposed to be good where you have rats and owls and don't want to kill owls.

I need this info on borax - I am waging full-scale war with the rats but still have lots of juveniles barn owls returning nightly for the food that I leave on their platform. Gee, maybe one of these days the barn owls will figure out that the small rodents running around on the ground are just like the small rodents that I leave for them, only LIVE, and WARM, and oh so much tastier! Sigh. Until then, gotta deal with the rats on my own!

My Dorking enjoyed eating the thighs off of voles. She'd catch one every other day for a week. Then the voles moved on to the Leghorn pen.

So tonight, I was out feed my Leghorns and one was stepping on a vole that was squeaking for mercy. I shooed her away and it crawled to the door on its front legs. Their flock watcher; an black Ameraucana cock ran over and made his "food here" sound and started to beat the beejeebers out of it until it flew up in the air hit the laying boxes and was dead. Then they all left and went back to eating.

In November we're definitely taking down the pens and making some new ones.

Idea for a new business - The Crowing Rooster Pest Control. For a low monthly fee people could rent proven rodent-control roosters to take care of their rats, voles, and other unsavory 4-legged house guests. The early morning crowing might also take care of unwanted human house guests at the same time!
