CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

Here's a quick picture I took about a week ago. I thought I posted it on the Northern CA thread. This was taken in the evening, on their way to bed so they're actually quite a bit redder then they look here. I think someone said another 4 weeks.....

I got them from Jeff and he said they were from Bev Davis eggs. I saw the eggs they came from and they were nice and dark.
Pretty. I love my Davis FBCMs. Such pretty birds. My blue coppers are from Denny, Lotsapaints and are nice birds with nice eggs. I have one pullet that has a FBCM daddy, but NO feathered shanks. I don't get that at all, but I love how dark blue she is, so she'll just have to stay as a layer.

Hello. Simi Valley here. Currently have 10 laying hens. Looking for some local fertile eggs to try my hand at incubating.
Good luck!

There are enough people around with chickens that you should be able to get some eggs from a breed that interests you. Even having some shipped to you isn't the end of the world. You'd probably get as good fertility out of shipped eggs as you would from Trader Joe's etc.

I have a neighbor in her late 80's that I've tried to help catch them. She has a huge pomagranant tree and they roost like 15 ft up. They're everywhere!!! I have between 3 and 5 rooster that don't live here, in my yard daily! Then there's one now that comes out front, because there's a Game hen that thinks she lives here, so he courts in my yard. There are also 4 other roos that come to see her too, but he's he most often. There's a small flock about 5 doors down that wanders one end of the block and probably 15 or 20 that cruise the other end. Between them and the dogs and the druggies, I'm liven large!!

So far no pics yet but hopefully while I'm out back tomorrow.

Sunny, let me know when you need to make your changes. Oh wow..........looks like I need to add breeds. LOL

OHHHHHH.........I can't believe I didn't mention that I picked up my trio of bantam CHOCOLATE AMs!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually 2 chocolate pullets and a split black roo. They're so cute! And I also got 2 more FBCM pullets and a new Silver Phoenix roo.
I'll let you know Kim. Can't wait to see more pics. :) What a day you've had but those are beautiful birds! What a great win!
Oh Sunny, how exciting!!! I can't wait to see pictures! Everyday when I pick up eggs I'm so anxious thinking there could be a dark chocolate in there. Their combs are getting redder by the minute! I swear they're just teasing me! I think they're about 21-22 weeks, is that too early for this breed?

Pictures please!!!!!!
Yeah I better get pics before they get eaten! I always forget about that.

And... sorry... but Ron and the others are correct. That is way too early for marans to start laying. My gals usually start laying between 8-9 months. And yes I have had to wait almost a year a couple of times. Marans do have super red combs compared to some breeds so it can look like they are closer to POL than they are. I've heard some folks claim theirs have laid at 6 months but I've never had one lay that early.

Welcome danab!

One piece of advice about incubating. Be careful cause it is addictive!!! Seriously addictive! I try to wait to start hatching til February but can never manage it. I don't have my breeding pens separated out yet but fertile eggs are entirely too easy to get. The result is chicks inside the house way too long. I feel terrible kicking them out into the cold even when they are fully feathered and I have had to expand their brooder 3 times. lol
It's probably the great flu epidemic of 2013.....
Let's hope not!

Ok, don't listen to a word I say!! I went back to my PM's to confirm age in these girls and I'm reading the old message and this is what papabrooder wrote "They are direct from tom culpeppers birds ( the flock I have are his originals) he was steward of the wade jean flock and like I said before, you would not believe the color of the eggs they are laying at the end of the season! "!!!! So embarrassed!! Jeff must think im a wackadoodle if he read any of that!!! Where the heck did I get Bev Davis out of that????? Anyway, they were hatched 9/1 so no matter where they came from they aren't laying soon!!!!!

Wolftracks! That is probably incredibly annoying, but it's almost comical! What city are you living in? I'm in Grass Valley.

Nah I do that all the time. "You act just like your dad!, Oh wait, not you act like HER dad!" Kids. Gotta love em.

Just kidding btw, but it sounded good! LOL

Sunny I had POL FBCMs for 5 months! Any day now, any day. Boom! almost 10 months old. OH! And then there was the AM that laid her first egg at 11 months! Freeloaders!

Since I'm on a roll here (just remembered how to change back to the mobile version...so much easier) I'll share some more of the Marans and a few of the rest of the EEs.

Quote: Maybe you can organize a night time roundup With hot chocolate and etc.
Quote: I grew up in a prune orchard so getting up into trees was a given. You would need someone to spot the ladder and then the person going up to get the birds.

I do like the idea of getting chicks too. I really do believe in multiple solutions. If you get the adults and the offspring, it is like using something to kill the beetles and the nymphs grubs.

Gotta control those wild Chickens!

Great pics! I like when someone gets on a rool and posts pics.

You all must think I'm nuts ot exaggerating about these blasted birds. I have a very long 4ft cyclone fence on one side of my yard. My frount yard it also 4 ft on that same die and a really useless picket fence in the front. This birds can get is to yard a as slow as I am, they get away pretty easy. The hen that lives in MY front yard, I have seen roost in my orange tree and just didn't bother, but she also roosts next door when 3 Beagles that just love chicken, live. She's lucky to be alive. I've caught her three times, but the first time she got away. Second time I put her in a holding cage and she got past me that day too. I figured I'd just see if she'd hang with my birds running around since the rooster do. Nope. Set her down and she ran through the yard, down the side and up and over to the front.
