CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

Hi everyone, I'm new here and am new to chickens. Was blessed to adopt 4 laying hens from a friend. I live in Tulare County. Anyone else in Tulare County?

WELCOME........I think you are ways South of me here in Turlock but my geography is really poor. I usually end up looking the new people up on mapquest to see where they are. You can be as involved as you have time for & always learn new things here.

I'm in the East SF bay area on the Delta about halfway between SF and Sac.

I'm here in Tulare! I have RIR, Barred Rock, White Leghorn, and EE hens with a RIR rooster and lots of quail and rabbits. Welcome!

Greg, Did I already ask you what kind of rabbits you have? I keep thinking I may want them again someday. I used to have a lot. I was thinking it would be nice to do it again. Something else for my son to take care of for me. It is great fertilizer for the garden though.

I have 3 Standard Rex does and a buck, and also a White New Zealand buck. The Rex/NO cross throws large framed, fast growing bunnies for meat. I processed my first from that cross over the weekend and it looks great!

Also, I found a home for my Light Sussex roo. He got an 11th hour reprieve on Freezer Camp day when a friend wanted him to go with their LS pullet.

Yes, I am about 2 1/2 hours south of you. I have several friends in your vicinity and visit up that way once or twice per year.

Good deal.....My L/S had an abcess on his foot that we just treated last night. Poor thing my son caught him & doctored it yesterday while he was here working. He has gotten something in it & it was all swollen, but my son cleaned it all out & treated it.
I had Californian & NZW for meat & have a 4H friend that has kids that show the Californians. If I decide to take that on again I will just get her non show culls. My grandmother would call me from town & ask me to dress a couple of fryers for her & bring them next time I was going in. I miss her still today & she passed in 1990.

Hi there! I live in Porterville, moved here not too long ago from Visalia. Quail, wow, how fun! Do you ever sell their eggs? If so, are you open to barter? :).

Eggs to hatch or eat? I guess the answer is yes to both...haha. I did some culling over the weekend, but am still cranking out 30-40 eggs/day. I have most of the hens with roos, so I have hatching eggs available. Still verifying fertility on some, but I sold some to a neighbor who had a nice hatch. I'm open to anything so let me know what you've got!

That's awesome. My grandparents are in their 80s and still fly down from Washington to visit. She got me into chickens, and now I've just about got her into quail...haha

I got my son 25 Coturnix quail from a game bird farm in Angels camp awhile back & we are eagerly awaiting the eggs to make pickled eggs.
