CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

So my brother and I finally got the pen to my new coop done. My EE chicks had been stuck in the coop for almost 2 weeks, but its 4x bigger than the brooder they were in, so I think they enjoyed the extra space. I finally took a tally of hens/roos, out of 18 chicks I have....6 hens, thats right, 12 ee roos. If they were cute I'd give them a pass, but I'm going to try and sell them on craigslist or else I'll have to feed them. Actually, fried chicken for my birthday in february sounds good. All together I have about a doz pullet chicks and 23 roos, the hatching game was not kind to me, I should really know better than to gamble, the casino isn't nice to me either.

well, my buff orps blew my plans to have a buff orp pen, since I lost 3 chicks to the dogs a few weeks ago and of the 4 I hatched 3 were roos. Now I need to figure out what to do with my pens, I think pen 1 will be BBS ameraucana with assorted brown egg layers, maybe the EE if they don't lay blue eggs, just so I can tell the AM eggs apart. Pen 2..I guess who ever is left, I'll probably put a blue wheaten roo in there, make me some super EE chicks...but I have to wait till they get bigger. The adult hens I have now refused to be mounted by my old roo, to be fair he was a young dark brahma, huge and he didn't have a soft touch. I have 2 ees and 1 jersy giant pullet laying, not enough eggs for all the feed I have to buy. That other pullet and the other 4 old hens better get into gear...I wonder what an ameraucana/jersey giant easter egger would look like.

Well out of about 25 hens I have 1 laying, so at least you have eggs. Feeding them 30% game grower since they have almost all been moulting and the checks I hatch before Easter haven't even started yet. AMs are so slow to lay for me. In all fairness to the girls though I don't have any type of light, so they are on vacation. Still back when I had Doms and WCBP I got eggs from all of them all the time, so I have slackers here.

Hi,

If you want them to lay, give them two or three hours of light in the morning. Feed is too expensive to not have them lay--Had a discussion about this on CA chickens and the consensus is since chickens have about 2000 ovum and often don't lay past three years(well not too much) they won't run out of eggs. One guy said he rarely had a chicken live long enough to run out of eggs. 2000 divided by 300 would be more than six and a half years per chicken.

Let me know if you want help with this. Yesterday I got 9 eggs from 11 hens.

I had way to much fun hatching Ameraucanas and my BLRWs this summer

If I had room I would love to add Seramas to the mix. I think my granddaughters would love those. Do you have any with the chocolate color like the one that SilverPhoenix/Kristin got at the Stockton show?

I have a thing for the chocolate color right now.

I tried for WC chocolate Polish babies but my eggs spent an extra 2 days in the mail due to the backlog from Hurricane Katrina and only two hatched, a WC khaki cuckoo pullet and a dark blue pullet with cuckoo markings in her crest. I will try again in the spring

Well that's no fair. We've had her since she was 10 months old. I don't get the go home break. LOL

Holding my little tort right now. This thing can climb out of a 2ft box! I do think they are both males though. That just means I need more I guess. They still haven't been named, but I have a few others with no name, so guess it's not a huge deal right now.

Sorry you have to have funeral time. Seems like everyone I know is going to one this week. Just found out when I peeked in at FB that 4 different people lost family. Never ends.

Its up to you but if you wanna change bunnys I dont mind as long as I still have some. That is unless you giys have already bonded. Let me know. Tomorrow I will be out back setting up a cage I got from Cliff today to cover my addictive buying at mondays auction!

Yeah the bonding thing. There will be more. I think these guys have a special place here. Even Dakotah has to check on them a few times a day. Plus they're in the house. <ight have been a bad idea, but I don't have anything closed in to keep this age warm enough. Yet!
