CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

I was tired so the pen isn't done, but will hold for the night for the Sussex. But I'm so mad right now!! I've mentioned the chickens that run around my neighborhood and eat my feed. Well I had to get creative, cause the wind is killing me, so I fastened a wire panel and then 2 pieces of wire onto the front to hold them in overnight. Finally got my phone to work for a pic and came in to see if it was in my email and I need to check before I post. I heard roosters getting into it and got out the door just in time to see 2 of those $@^$^%$@^@%&&$% roosters fighting with the Sussex roo through the wire. There's blood all over his chest. They got a wattle and his face, so I had to open that thing back up and check him. I swear I'm going to find a way to catch those things and practice processing on them!

OK I don't know what happened but it was completely black??? Here's the one I just took, which includes the blood. Just great! Their first pic that took and I get this!

I've noticed that he shakes his head sometimes. The hen lost her footing a while ago. First time I've seen her do that, but he has done the head thing since I took him out of the cage at the show. What could that be?

Can you see how dirty he already has what I used for water? He has plenty of room and it's right against the front of the pen and he walks through it. I had just filled that thing! Had to use something until I get the pen done and can build a waterer. Man this bird is heavy and when he flips his wings with me not having a good grip on him, it hurts!

He's a really handsome guy! So you have stray dogs and stray roosters too? Amazing.

I noticed alot of head shaking going on at the show also. Was told it's mites but that is just what I heard, hope somebody that knows can give the answer.

I have a neighbor in her late 80's that I've tried to help catch them. She has a huge pomagranant tree and they roost like 15 ft up. They're everywhere!!! I have between 3 and 5 rooster that don't live here, in my yard daily! Then there's one now that comes out front, because there's a Game hen that thinks she lives here, so he courts in my yard. There are also 4 other roos that come to see her too, but he's he most often. There's a small flock about 5 doors down that wanders one end of the block and probably 15 or 20 that cruise the other end. Between them and the dogs and the druggies, I'm liven large!!

Oh and the lady I mentioned said that she's had lots of people try and catch all these birds, but they've been around for at least 6 years, roosting in her tree. And people will literally run down hens and chicks in the street. It's aweful. Who does that???

Is everybody tired out from PPBA still?
ME!!! But I need to get my entry together for Fresno. I wanted to go to Ferndale, but my housesitter (son) already had plans.

The chickens, sheep, misc pets & alpaca are easy, but my dogs are particular about who takes care of them.

Yes, 22 weeks is too early.

28 to 30 for mine.

Well shoot! Did yours red up a long time before they laid because these girls are really red and one is a little brighter then the other. They're hanging with the roo and even squatting for him but I haven't seen her let him finish.
They were odd for starting to lay. The two that went with Chiqita started around 26 weeks. The two that the guy at work took, waited until well after 30 weeks.

Normally I would say yours should start In a couple of weeks based on the squatting. Getting through winter and into spring should help.

I hope yours are earlier! Please post pictures when you can of the pullets and later the first egg!
Here's a quick picture I took about a week ago. I thought I posted it on the Northern CA thread. This was taken in the evening, on their way to bed so they're actually quite a bit redder then they look here. I think someone said another 4 weeks.....

I got them from Jeff and he said they were from Bev Davis eggs. I saw the eggs they came from and they were nice and dark.

Hi and Welcome!

I am in Woodland so a bunch north of you.

Trader Joes and Whole Foods have Fertile eggs. They are cheap and a good way to learn. I hatched two TJs from a dozen. They are the white pullets in my Avatar.
GO early to Trader Joes, and if you can get ahold of a friendly manager, they will hold eggs out for you so they do not go in the fridge. Those develope better. Mine got eggs every day, but the ones from Tuseday developed and the ones from Thursday do not. I bet they get eggs at the depot on Monday and ship out all week.

And welcome!
Wolftracks, thast crazy. It sounds like you live in Hawaii! but less hot and wet.

The color i see is not close to laying, my girls get BRIGHT red looks like lipstick. That looks pink to me. Of course its probaly the photo. They also like to hide eggs, anywhere they could be stashing em?
