California Valley Quail..... Help?

Sorry only raise the Bobwhite/georgia giant strains here!..I have had every variety there is and bob are what i started with as a child and coturnix too...I prefer to raise bobs but get jumbo coturnix every few years to make some Very special pickled eggs cajun style that i will begin to market here and on other forums. just getting started on the web and will ramp it up gradualy!..I will also have BLRW and Delawares! now!

Well thank you!..can be my first customer on byc..havent set price yet but should be some where in 1.65 to 195 range..i will get that done and you can order ahead of laying if you wish..I have pay pal...new to it as well..lol...but the first eggs of the year are the best. And the ones i want to hatch myself for next years breeders..first ten to twelve from each hen will produce better, more productive, and desease resistant bird than that of a later egg!..let me know about how many you will need and i will reserve...I will also be selling day olds when they hatch...but wont have them hatched for a while to come as they arent laying yet..under light for 2 weeks now and should be about 2 weeks before the first egg..dont worry i will prove fertility and garantee it before shipping anyone eggs!..:)Email is [email protected]

oh and you can have bobwhites in one sq foot per bird..on wire or on ground ....ground would be pref. in a large flight pen for flight trained birds..but i have taken birds out of small wire pens and put them out for dogs and they flew great!

My 2 cents on raising birds for bird dogs:

- If you are gonna spend close to $2/egg go with chukar. They are stronger flying birds, but need good drainage or to be raised on wire.
-10' tall pens are fine, but you can go as short as 6' without ill effect on performance.
- Aviary netting comes in 25' and 50' widths design accordingly
- Consider using, hardware cloth on the bottom for predator protection (burying it a foot discourages tunneling, chicken wire can be chewed through)
- a minimum of 4 sq ft per adult bobwhite is recommended by most publications to prevent conflict and minimize disease (smaller areas can be used for younger birds)
- Minimize human contact with the birds and they act more wild, particularly from 4 weeks on (invest in range feeders, nipple waters, feed and water at night. I have been happy with the ones from http://www.qualitywildlife.com)
-Plant cover in your pen or provide cover for your birds (Dead Christmas trees are great)
- Also consider setting up a johnny house, if you have the land, and the birds not only will be well conditioned and reusable (minus losses), such that you will need less birds.

Sounds like you are planning on a good size pen that can handle up to 150 birds.

Private message me if you have any other questions.

do you have to have a permit?.Louisianna does not req. permit if these are for your personal use and you are not marketing or selling etc?.....i have had chuckars..nearly impossible to sex..very canabalistic if crowded..as are almost any bird!.....150 Chuckars will consume as much feed as 400 Bobs..a pen that size will hold a lot of bobs! js
