Heyy guys. Put this in the sexing thread, but noone replying so thought I would try in here as it is a quail question. At what age do the boys start getting the blue to tell them apart from the females pls? Ours will be 6 weeks on Thursday. No blue showing at all atm. So just curious.

Thank you xxxxx

You should be able to see a white line across the male face. Female shouldn’t have that white line.

Can you post a picture? The black face feathers and white stripe should be coming in by 6-7 weeks.

These are my gambel boys at 7 weeks old. California's have similar face coloring.

Hello. So got as many photos as I could! Haahaa I'm sure I got all 4, but it's hard to tell! They are sooo fast moving and move alot! Don't suppose any chance of knowing my 2 bobwhites? Can tell the difference atm because one has abit of dirt on his nose right now.

My guesses are below. You should be able to tell for sure in a few days.

Image 2 looks female.

In image 3, I see some black coming in under the eye on the quail in the back, so that one is probably male. I don't see black on the front one, but she is a little fuzzy so unsure but guessing female unless you see black under the eye.

Image 6-7, front quail - I see black under the eye, probably male.

Image 8 looks female.

The others I can't tell - either wrong angle, fuzzy, or not California. (I don't know how to sex the other kinds of quail.)

Keep us posted!! :pop
