While I had kept chickens years ago, it was only last fall that my wife hinted she'd like to try keeping some. The appeal of fresh eggs was our primary motivation, but secondarily, I just like birds of all sorts. We've kept parrots in our home for almost 30 years now - we have four currently, but one time had as many as 17 when we were breeding a few.
Since we have a huge garden every year - year round actually - having manure makers just seemed right too. So, after thinking about it for awhile, I came up with a design of my own for a chicken tractor and set about building it this past summer. We bought 8 chicks in July and two more about a month later. All are growing like proverbial weeds and LOVE garden scraps and extras as well as their regular feeds. They go nuts for grapes and watermelon!
We're looking forward to that first scramble of eggs next year.
