Today is day 26 for my calls in the incubator. I have them positioned in my suro king incubator so that when you shine the light in you can see the aircells. I can see the shadow on three of the eggs that beaks are through the membrane but no external pips yet. How long can they go inside before this becomes a problem? I have read on this site that some people will put an hole in the air cell for them. Should I consider doing this and at what point? Thanks.

i suck at hatching call ducks. i have about a 100% hatch rate with my rouens and chickens. I have tried making a small hole in the shell but the membrane get stucks to the baby which then causes a problem in itself. Hopefully someone will be able to give you an appropriate answer and maybe we can both learn.

Hello! Today was Day 25 for my Calls. I had no beaks in air sacs yet, but still movement when candled. I have hatched calls before and did not have to help any of them. but I am told that I got lucky. I will be watching this post for advice as well!!

That was also my concern with putting a hole in the airsac. Seems like it would dry out pretty fast, even with the humidity up. I'm going to see how things progress overnight and then see how the movement of the eggs are in the morning. My last hatch I had only one egg in the incubator and it was rocking and rolling all over and then on day 27 just stopped. Never pipped internally or externally. I'm really hoping I dont have a repeat of that! So far seeing that some have internally pipped is one step farther than the last time!

My fingers are crossed for you! My Day 28 is Monday, keep your fingers crossed for me!!!

I ended up intervening yesterday afternoon. Glad I did. I used a dremel and put a hole into the aircell and once I was in there, discovered the membrane inside to be completely dried up. Almost no moisture inside the eggs. I removed a good part of the shell around the entire aircell and moistened and pulled the membrane back to allow the babies to try and get themselves out. I have 2 completely out and 4 most of the way out but still attached to the bottom of the shell. I am keeping the humidity high in the incubator and just seeing what happens. They are all sleeping alot. They seem pretty weak compared to ducklings I have hatched in the past, but maybe my others did this too, I cant remember. I removed the two that were completely out of their shell and placed them into the brooder. They are tired and sleeping mostly. I offered a little sugar water hoping to give them a little energy, but they are not interested yet. We have one still mostly encased in the shell. His little beak is out and appears to be a bit deformed on the beak. The beak is narrow through the middle and you can see his tongue on the sides. Not sure if he will completely hatch or if he did if he would even be viable. I will try and post pics later of the two in the brooder and also one I took of one of the eggs with membrane shrink wrapped to the baby. Something must be off in my incubator for this to happen. I was misting once a day and according to the incubator, the humidity was at about 65% through the entire incubation except for lock down which I bumped up to 70%. Good luck with your hatch tomorrow MissD.

Babies are perking up. They go through spells up running around and then crash! I'm so relieved! Still have three others in the inbator attached to their bottom shells and looks to finishing resorbing. They all appear ok and I think by morning they may be ready to join the other three in the brooder. What a crazy experience this whole process has been! Need these guys to come out so my next batch can go in. I'm going to play with the humidity more this time around. Pics coming, I'm going to start loading them.

Glad to hear you are getting them out. I am not great at hatching Calls either. I did help last spring and debating what to do this time. I only had one live last year because I helped it soooo. Cannot wait for your pictures!

Here are a few pics of the babies inside their eggs when I first opened them, and how they are now.
