I am new to raising call ducks. I have 6 now. How old do they have be to start laying eggs? do they incubate, and raise their own? or do I need to incubate them with an artificial system?

hi this a reply to questions i asked about my call duck laying
hope it helps

hi Trishamonks.. I am new to ducks but I have 4 call ducks.. 2 boys and 2 girls... they were hatched March 15th... the gal I bought them from told me that sometimes calls can be alittle immature when laying and may lay later than most ducks..like more around 7 months... 1 of my girls tho did started laying a week ago... smile I put out free choice oyster shell since I dont have my ducks seperated (and she chows it down) and I put out a nesting box with grass and straw which she uses.. My other girl has NOT layed yet..anyway she was exactly 5 months ,which is normal for any duck....and NO they are not seperated.. she just goes in her nesting box and the others pay No attention... how old is your call??

Ahh call ducks, they make great pets, but unfortunately, only lay around about 30 eggs a year, around about march/april (thats when my 4 did) They dont make very good sitters

, my while female sat on 3 eggs for only a day each, the minute i tired to move her to a safe location, that was it she was off and not coming back, I would recommend incubating them personally.

Then again, I know some people who have had great success with call ducks, i suppose it depends on the bird

They don't lay until the first spring after they hatch. Mine start laying about the end of March and usually quit by late June altho this year one actually kept laying thru most of July. I have 3 that are good little setters. I've never had much luck incubating them so I let the hens do it for me.

thank you Katy........... mine are about 3 months old is all, I would have to check for sure but am pretty sure they hatched the first week in June.
