called the cops on my neighbor last night....let the nightmare begin..

You are in between a rock and a hard place. God bless you as you work through this little test in life.

I would like to be able to shoot at foxes on my property. We are on 8 acre lots though and if I miss the bullet could possibly hit someone. They travel pretty far. It's amazing more people don't get killed by bullets when people are hunting or just shooting at beer cans.

If he's just being investigated or defending himself then he isn't a felon yet. Besides, laws on rifles are non existent. The only thing that has even a little regulation is handguns.

I don't understand this law at all... I get that you can fire a weapon on your property, but how does that give you the right to "deposit" a bullet in someone else's??

Hmm... if you could find the bullet maybe you could at least tag him for littering... he did dump his property on your property after all... trash that you cannot use... not much, slap on the wrist really... but enough slaps and it starts hurting. Remember they nailed Capone for Tax Evasion.

I did not see to where the neighbor is shooting onto your property or has shot onto your property...

I get it...I would be livid if my kid was downrange as well...

Is the neighbor beside you or behind/in front of you?

Good luck with it...

this year the idot put his deer stand on our very well marked property

Not to highjack the thread, but we found a new deer stand on our property once (without permission) and hubby took it down and kept it at the house. It wasn't long before the owner showed up with a sheepish apology. If it is on your property, it is YOURS.

I don't have much advice except talk to a local lawyer, to clarify what the laws that apply to you are, and what you can legally do. Just because discharge laws are liberal, doesn't mean you will be ignored.

I would not bother setting up a camera til I knew how things would go, and if someone would even look at a film.

I don't think 'following the law' is always going to be enough to get along with neighbors. If my shooting upset my neighbor, I could always go shoot at a friend's, or at a rifle range. Some people, that would just make them shoot off their porch all the more.

In most states, if a bullet leaves your property and does some damage, you will be liable. But as far as I know (which isn't very far) every single state and locality has different laws, and even more importantly judges, law enforcement, add their own point of view...but...

KEEP IN MIND...even deeds and covenants on certain properties can restrict shooting. There is also that.

TOO...sometimes it's a little complicated, where you live and what laws apply there. Your village or your township laws might apply.

A lot of times, I hear people say they can legally shoot as long as they are 500 feet from a dwelling, but when I look at the applicable law, the law usually doesn't say anything like that. Sometimes there is a limit based on how wide the property is, especially where there are lots of long, narrow properties.

My instructor told me, you have to shoot into an earth berm or something very solid (not a grove of trees, a target or into the horizon) or you will have stray shots, even with some of the least powerful weapons. When we shot, he set it up so we were shooting into the side of a hill. But he also told me most people don't follow even minimum safety rules.

I would try to not think about what the girlfriend said about the man. Sometimes people get revved up, and start saying things that aren't 100% true. Some people kind of brag about things as they think that makes them 'cool' or 'tough', or that neighbors will be backed off and not mess with them.

It is hard, though, we lived near a convicted robber. He stole my car and belongings. We moved away from there.

I would want to set up a camera to record any guns pointed at the home,or if the neighbor should trespass. I don't think calling the police every time he shoots will help in stopping him.Calling and maybe even the camera will anger him. After all he supposidly already shot your dog. He may do a bit of target practice on the birds. Nothing will be done until you or your children are harmed, and then what is the point right?

If at all possible I would look into moving if it looks like he won't. No home is worth living in fear daily from some idiot.
We really need a database for homes for sale.If your neighbor decides to move post the property so a decent BYCer can buy it!

Hope it all works out with no harm to anyone.

Our properties run right alongside each other. I can stand on my deck and talk loud to my neighbor and carry on a conversation. That is how close we are. Straight down the backyard on the fence where our yards come together is where my 13 year old was standing watering the ducks. The duck are on the wood line. He was shooting straight down his backyard but the target was a little to the left. His backyard is only about 100 yards across, not very wide….just to give you a visual. His claim is he was shooting at the target, not my kid. His 2 kids were dancing around on the porch with him. We try to reason with him and tell him accidents do happen…...what if your kid bumps your arm when you are shooting……the gun and bullets you are using are known to ricochet…..what if your kids were down there where my kid was. He said he doesn’t care, so we are done talking about it. We just called the cops. He shoots from his porch all the time and I don’t like it. I never say anything unless my kids are in the backyard. My husband has worked in the county government a little over 20 years and this guy has a list of problems so if there is anything the county attorney can do, he will.
