I don’t think there would be any reason not to test breed them. If you didn’t like the results, you could just not use those birds going forward.

I did this exact thing and took about 6 eggs and put them in the incubator I love doing test runs lol

Keep in mind that you may get lighter splashes (less blue spots) if you breed splash x splash crosses.

Ohhhh! Those are some fat bottomed girls! I looooove them. And I love the pattern. Sometimes Splash can be so pale and boring, but those are some handsome birds!

I actually really like all of them. I'm having a hard time seeing any actual leakage on the male in those photos. There's a tint to his feathers, but the hens have some discoloration too, and it's not in an area where you'd generally see leakage. Can you get some more photos of him/them in different light? And just to be clear, you'll only get Splash offspring when breeding to Splash together as the chicks inherit one Blue gene from each of the parents. If you want to produce Blue babies, cross him onto some Black hens.

Ahhh that’s super good to know!! I was wondering how to get some blue babies!! I have some blues that I bought from a local English orp breeder and was wondering how I could get more!! So if I have some lighter splash hens I could breed them to a black roo and possibly get blue babies? I also have a black roo that I hatched from a lavender roo and black hen. What could possibly come from that roo and one of the lighter splash hens I have? I really like when the splashes have the very different dark colorations thank you for your input!

Gold based blues?? Whaaaat? You just blew my mind everything I thought I knew has just been blown to smitherins if you could be so kind to explain this I would REALLY appreciate it! Please explain it like you’re talking to a kindergartener because I am definitely not keen on genetics and how the coloring works I’m trying to learn though! I just assumed blues were bred with blues and would make blues lol I’m just confused on how the gold would come into play lol or could it have been that the black roo (used to breed with the blue hen to make the splash) was bred from a gold based hen/roo and a black hen/roo? I’m a taaaad confused lol

Yes, or a blue. Black x splash = 100% blue. Blue x splash = 50% blue and 50% splash.

All chickens, even if they’re solid black, have gold or silver. Roosters can have two gold genes, two silver genes, or one silver and one gold gene. Hens can have one gold gene OR one silver gene. It can show up in leakage, which may be the case with your splash rooster.

All chicks from a black x splash cross will be blue. The black x lavender rooster carries lavender, making him a lavender split. Half of his chicks will also be splits, though they won’t show lavender. If you’re selling these chicks, make sure to label them as lavender splits, as some people don’t want recessive colors popping up when they’re breeding.

You would only get Blue babies from that cross. The Splash hens would give all the offspring one blue gene and the Black sire would give none. So you'd have 100% blue babies.

I would not use that male as he carries the Lavender gene. That will make things very confusing later down the road if you want to know what to expect from them as offspring bred to one another or their father, could throw Blue, Black, Splash, and Lavender birds. And the BBS could carry Lavender. Most breeders don't like surprises like that.
