Calling all New Brinsea Owners - PRIZES - March Hatch-a-long

HI, I facebooked Ms. Pascale "Eggs-Ecutive" and volunteered for the March Hatch. She gave me a choice of two prizes, so I'm the one that selected the OvaScope. Brinsea made the announcement on their FB page after the winner for Feb was selected. I created the new thread on BYC and basically 'copied' the rules from the Feb hatchalong. The rules have to be clear-
1. Register on the new BYC thread that one is joining the hatch
2. The SAME pic has to be posted on the BYC hatch-a-long thread and Facebook
3. Pic must be posted before March 31 (or in the next case Apr 30) by midnight EDT (Brinsea is in Fla) in both locations.

I kept an EXcel spreadsheet in the order that people signed in. I recorded their BYC name, approx hatch date (if posted). When the pic of the hatch was posted, I recorded the Post #, and then posted that # on the FB picture AND recorded the users FB name. I will send the names to Brinsea on March 31st of those who posted on both sites.

When peeps posted in only one location, I either FB'd them or used the messaging here on BYC to let them know. There will be questions about how to upload pics on both sites. It was a little more time consuming than I thought it would be, but I'm glad I volunteered.

Maybe we should all go back to post # 1 and review the rules and make suggestions on how to improve the process.

Yur March Volunteer Peep ~Heather

& you did a great job!!! Wow, she let you pick the price!! You know in April Brinsea is introducing
their big brooder. I think they said it holds like 50 Iddy Biddy's. Wouldn't that be an awesome prize Man I know I want one. I'm not to fond of using those stupid heat lamps. I almost killed the iddy's already I forgot to move the lamp down got up at three & went to check on them. They spilled their water & were sleeping in the water. The temp was way cold. I vote for asking for the eco mega brooder. Nice name HUH.

Brinsea gave me two choices for a prize- the brooder or the OvaScope so I picked the scope. If Stacykins is going to volunteer, she could suggest the mega brooder as a great way to introduce their new product.

There are quite a few peeps who signed up for the hatchalong and then disappeared. There is another thread called March hatch-along and I posted on there with people to come to this thread if they have a Brinsea, but they may have subscribed to that thread instead. This is the official Brinsea-BYC contest thread.....

I'm not monitoring the other thread:p

Here's a picture of the mob.

My best advice is to incubate some less expensive/ less valuable eggs to start. If chicks hatch healthy on day 21 then your temp is exactly right. If they hatch early, temp is too high. If they hatch late, temp is too low. Most should hatch on day 21 aside from the early birds and stragglers. That would be a little nerve wracking though. I have 2 Brinsea incubators. They arrived and plugged in with no adjustments and one was one degree OVER where it should have been and one was one degree UNDER where it should have been. By adjusting the controls (I have ECO by the way) I was able to get them all to the correct temp, according to the Brinsea thermometer included. Now, I have put in other thermometers and all they seem to do is make me worry. No two thermometers seem to agree but my chicks hatched on day 21 and hatched very healthy 100% and 100% survived on my first 2 hatches. So that tells me the Brinsea thermometer is accurate.

AND, just to clarify... was the foam and toilet paper WET? Are you familiar with wet bulb thermometers and how they work? Because if its wet, it will read lower and this is connected more with how you test humidity. Its normal for an absorbent wet surface in the incubator to read lower and if I am correct in assuming its wet, your humidity is fairly high? although that is a crude way to estimate humidity.... What are you hatching? I would guess waterfowl.

I see you dangled it in through the vent? That is pretty close to the fan so maybe that accounts for the lower temp. It also requires you to open the vent all the way which could have caused a temporary drop in just that area.
Have you tried putting a second reliable thermometer inside so that it is visible from the outside?

I just set 7 of my extra B/B/S/L Bantam Ameraucana eggs in my Mini Advanced. My Homemade 'bator went out and I had 14 eggs in it, so I had them stacked in my HB until the Brinsea go fired up. I'll bet setting the other 7 eggs under two broodies.
