Calling all New Brinsea Owners - PRIZES - March Hatch-a-long

My humidity was right at 71%, but of course jumped when the chicks started hatching.

Quiltnchik...you have the Brinsea...so I'm curious as to why you set the humidity at 71 Rh? I am just going by the book that came with my Brinsea and it recommended 65RH for hatching. I have the Octagon Advance EX....what does yours say...how did you decide to go with 71?? Maybe it varies with which Brinsea incubator you get?
OK...I see now you have the eco....I don't think that has a digital knob for setting the humidity so you are filling trays? Does your instruction sheet say 71 RH is ok?? I'm just trying to learn all this and I'm fretting over every little thing.

I run mine at 70% by adding a sponge that has been wet and wrung out. Then if I need to increase the humidty, I use a drinking straw and just barely raise the front of the Eco 20 and slid the straw in to the sponge and add water to it.

Minimum humidty for lockdown is 65% max is 75% which is why I keep mine at 70% because it will go up when the hatching begins...too low they can shrink wrap and too high they can drown.

I filled both wells and put a double layer of paper towels draped into them and laying across the bottom of the incubator. When I put the eggs back in and closed it up, the humidity jumped to 75%, but then settled out at 71%, so that's where I left it. 17/17 eggs hatched and the chicks are doing great!

Ok, not going to post pictures as I'm not entering the contest but all my birds have finished hatching. Here are my results;

6 of the 7 Coturnix hatched on March 23rd
8 of the 14 chickens hatched on March 25th.

Of my chickens all 14 were alive and I had noted movement when I had candled them on day 15 (that was my last candling). 3 quit shortly after that and the remaining 3, 2 failed to pip through the aircell and one pipped the aircell but didn't pip the shell.

So my total is 6 Coturnix, 1 Blue Andulsian, 3 Frizzled cochins, 1 Black Jersey Giant, 1 Australorp, 2 Black Mottled Orps (split to Lavs)

Well my Brinsea has the auto water reservoir...which is nice so I don't have to use a sponge or water tray or open up to add water. The book just said Poultry hatching RH....65. No minimum ..no maximum. I have read other sites on BYC that said 70% but not in my instruction book that came with the incubator. I figured the same thing as you...humidity will go up during hatching so set it at 63 and it varies a little. How many hatches have you done with your Brinsea? Maybe I should up my RH a tad? Questions, questions....never ending questions.....

And these were shipped eggs correct?

And do you have your new Brinsea Brooder all set up for the chicks? (Leahthor was the winner of the Brinsea Feb hatchalong). Hey you can post your pics, I just won't include you in the participants!

I kept waiting for the last chick to hatch so I could open the lid safely for the picture. Finally all are done. I had a few that didn't make it
