Calling all people whose birds have experienced corneal scratches

Can you tell me how Sage is doing? I have a similar problem with my duck, Agnes. This is how she looked this morning.

That's Sage's eye looked like at first. The first day she was opening and closing it (mostly closing it), but the next day, when I took her to the vet, it was weeping copious amounts of clear fluid.

Sage is much better, and engaging in all her duck behavior, but her eye is still not 100% out of the woods. If you can get your hands on some Terramycin or antibiotic eyedrops, try and put them on her eyeball. (You'll have to part the eyelid, to get the drops in,) That, along with some anti-inflammatory meds and painkillers, were the prescribed protocols for a scratched cornea. I personally found the eyedrops were easier to deal with. (I used both the Terramycin and the antibiotic eyedrops.) A thin layer, which looked like cooked egg white, developed on Sage's eye, and I think it interfered with the antibiotic drops going on top of the scratch. The vet took a clean q tip type swab and removed it and then gave her some antibiotics, to see if an eye infection was doing a number on her eye. Since that happened, her eye is looking a little better. She is also keeping her eye open all the time, which the vet said is a good sign. Previously, she was opening and closing it.

I noticed that at first, Sage didn't want to lower her head to eat/drink, or when she did, she would tilt her head, so I had to make sure to bring food to her and raise it to her bill, to make sure she ate. She mostly ate worms the first few days.

The second vet I went to gave her a stronger painkiller, and that seemed to make a difference in Sage feeling better. Her appetite returned and she became more active. Apparently a scratched cornea is really really painful.

Good luck!

Awesome to hear. I got my girl drinking a bit I've been offering her all the tempting foods and shes getting eye flushes. I plan on doing 3 daily and applying an antimicrobial gel by veterycin afterwards. I have her on amoxicillin. I don't have a pain killer for her but do have baby aspirin maybe that will work. I added electrolytes to her water for stress and I have her in our garage so she can stay calm and away from the flies. Thank you for the input I'm happy to hear Sage is doing well. Hopefully Agnes will also improve quickly.

I hope Agnes will be right as rain very soon!
