calling all wild bird feeders!!

Birds really flock to you shaw, but does that bring predators to the birds also? I had to take my feeders down years ago, all the spillage attracted, raccoons, squirrels, skunks, opossums and even less desirable animals. Feel cheated - wasn't like that in my city days. Saw a Blue Jay once and was ecstatic

Well it may draw some. But where I live we have a grain elevator two blocks away on one side and a feed store a block away on the other side. So we have predators and birds No matter what. I haven't been feeding the wild birds much this year, I actually think that's why the Martins have done so well. Not as many other birds bothering them. They don't eat from feeders anyway, mostly insects.
And when it comes to hawks these birds are awesome at running them off. Watched about 20 or so of them attacking a hawk that swooped down over the yard The other day. They kept on it till it was long gone. The other awesome thing is the ducks have learned to run for cover when they hear the alert to danger calls from them.

Pouring rains today, but got shots of the baby bluebirds out and about from their nest box.

We don't feed these ones but back in 1999, we did plant the Caragana shelterbelts that host the bugs these birds feed to their babes!

They are pretty hungry lil' boogers, eh.

I have very intelligent wild birds up here in the north country....Dux could learn a thing or two from them.

A couple weeks ago we were watching TV in the evening and a male Red breasted Grosbeak flew to the window on the north side of our living room and started pecking at the window and flying into it....

Then it went to the window on the east side and did the same things again. It would not leave us alone. We went and looked at the feeders they were empty...(Hey, we get busy and sometimes forget them,,,so give us a break.

Today, I was working at my computer and the female Grosbeak came to the window and sat on a oriole feeder I have here. It looked right at me with a look of disgust. I told her " I know your feeder is empty, I will get to it in a little bit".

It did not care for my response. It then flew onto the ledge of the window and began pecking at the window. It is very irritating to be writing when a bird is pecking at the window. I told her again I would get to it.

This really ticked her off, she flew back a couple feet and flew hard into the window making a huge BANGing noise. She crashed into the window about 4 times and I gave up and went out and filled the feeders. Life is good and I can study and write again.
