Mystery snails are not that great with algae control. They need a good protein source and calcium. The operculum needs protein to form and stay healthy. Or it may fall off or not cover all of the snail body. The shell needs calcium or it becomes thin and can easily break or chip.

Water quality is also a big deal. pH needs to be 7 or higher. Acidic water can cause a breakdown of the shell but also cause swelling in the body of the snail.

I have many snails that had shell problems when I bought them. If you would like pictures to see when water quality and conditions changed with their new growth let me know. I also have one with a cleft (ongoing) and one with a jagged crack that’s healed.

In the meantime her are 2 of my snails with some newly hatched babies!

Pretty Jade color! So a increase in calcium won’t fix what’s already happened but will help the growth of new shell starting at the lip of the shell. You may want to check your pH levels. 7 or higher is best. Anything lower will eat at the shell which is what I think is happening.
