calling any one from missouri

Hello new to the forum. I'm located in little town of willow springs mo. Within driving distance of Branson, Springfield, and Rolla. But the closest big city is west plains.

I raise all sorts of stuff. We have few types of pigeons. Fantails and tons of racing homers. Trying to thin down the racers and acquire new types.

Also raise coturnix quail several variety and trying to find button quail. We pickle the eggs and butcher the birds I love raising quail.

We have golden pheasant.

Muscovy ducks. I have some mandarin ducks as well. Just sold my last pair of call ducks trying to lean more towards the mandarins.

Chickens are several types.
White laced red cornish
Heritage road island red
Barred cochin standard
Dark brahmas
And a few random sillies and a single blue cochin banty hen lol. We also raise rabbits and on top of all this week live in town. Very hard to keep a working poultry farm in the city limits. But it's possible. My wife and I love it.

Greenfield genetics... is that Greenfield Farms? Have you heard of Bresse Farms? I'm wondering what's the best? Investing a lot of money into this breed... I want to make sure we get the best.
Silly auto correct on my cell phone. Green Fire Farms. As to Bresse Farms, yes I heard of them. I called him, he seemed nice. I was turned off by the Pay Now and Ill ship your hatching eggs whenever its your turn. He has some sort of official wait list. You have no way of knowing who's on the list, but most of all when you will get your eggs. I wasn't too happy with that option. I almost pulled the trigger with Bresse Farms, but again after hearing of his policies I decided not to buy. If he had said to me, I have 25 people ahead of you and based on the amount of eggs in thier orders it could be X amount of days. He could've also said your CC would not be charged until your order is ready to ship.

Regardless, I didn't buy from Breese Farms (Mr Moss). Oh.. I almost forgot, he is selling a Splash, a mix of the different colored varieties of Breese. Even in France where these birds hail from, this is not a bird they breed or recognised as a breed.

I ended up going with a person who has Green Fire Farms genetics. Genetic that he collected from 3 different flocks and is now breeding himself. They were $36 a dozen, and $15-$20 shipping. I got the Whites as they are the one most sought after for their meat.

I went with Breese for my meat birds for several reasons. First I want to raise my own chicks. One cant do that with a Hybrid like a Cornish cross. Bresse is a heritage breed, they are great Free rangers. They have great instincts for finding food, and survival. Breese are a dual purpose bird. They not only have meat that is considered to be the best of any chicken (by the French), they are great egg layers. They dont take 6 months to lay an egg. They lay at 16 weeks, but have been known to lay at 14 weeks. Also the breast can be as big as a Cornish Cross.

For me it was a no brainer after I did all my research. I only wish it was an APA recognized breed. Maybe one day it will be.

Thank you for that review.

Its awesome to get info from someone in the know. I woukdnt have thought to ask all those questions. Thank you so much for sharing. I'd just started researching them. My brother was telling me about them since we have so many issues with our cross breeds. I definitely want the real thing. I'd been looking for a good dual purpose bird. I've been so frustrated with what we find around here. I love my girls but sometimes... we also want to raise chicks. I'm trying to carve a homestead out of our boulder-ridden land. Self-sufficiency is our goal. My brother will be thankful to know the differences as well. He has a homestead in TX. We are pretty new to raising our own chickens... I did live on a chicken farm in Arkansas when I was little... different ball game all together.

From Sullivan mo here. Love my Easter Eggers. Attempting my first incubated hatch now and it's not looking good.
Welcome To BYC & the Missouri thread. Incubating is hard! I got lucky my first couple of tries, but then I had really bad hatch rates after that. I also currently have eggs in the incubator. 8 Black Penedesenca eggs. We'll see how things go this time. I set them up and now I am leaving them alone. I have an auto turner, so I don't have to worry about that. Have you checked out Sally Sunshine's hatching thread? I think it is called hatching with friends or something like that. She has tons of good information on incubating. Maybe it's called incubating with friends, I don't remember, but if you find SallySunshine, then you'll find it. Good luck!!

Wish I saw this a few days ago I would of went.

They hold the poultry swap first Sat. of every month. So next one will be April 1. I didn't make it yesterday either but when I have gone, it was well attended. BTW, if any of you happen to go to this swap, it's also worth stopping at the Webb City Farmers' Market just north of Joplin. It's a year round market and producers only, which is remarkable. Good sized. Always busy. Veggie vendors all have greenhouses and grow year round, so they have tomatoes, peppers in addition to all the cold weather veggies. There are also vendors with meat, eggs, dairy, baked goods etc. The egg people are always glad to talk chickens with you.....
