Jeria! I am so sorry to hear about your chickens. I have been out of town since the 8th. Our dog has also killed some of our chickens ( in the beginning, when we first got her as a puppy). She basically "played with them "to death. She has finally learned to leave them alone, but if they go into "her" yard, she will chase them. I don't trust her around ANY young chickens though.
I'm glad that wasn't enough to put you off the idea of having chickens. When are your new chickies suppose to arrive?

Thanks Karen, Hope you had a good vacation. I have no idea if Jazz was playing or the terrier in her simply took over and killed them. I thought they were pretty secure but not from her. New chicks are scheduled to ship on Monday from Chickens for Backyards since they are here in MO I figure they will arrive the next day. No way would that change my mind too much time and $$ into their coop, it isn't being built to be empty.

And now you know a little bit more about determined predators. You can make sure your coop and run are super secure! Eventually you'll probably lose some again, but hopefully not for a long time!

Hasn't changed my perspective on the coop and run, just that my pup may not be friends with the chickens, so free ranging in my yard may not ever happen unless the pups are locked in the house. After having major damage to my house by coons my plans haven't changed.

Lunch break: most of the siding pieces are cut and hopefully this afternoon be assembled onto the frame.

I'm from Missouri! I haven't had my chicken long enough to have any problems yet though. I guess the big one is that it's a eight hour drive to rural kansas to get anymore chickens from my Grandparents. So... she's just alone with her eggs right now. Kinda hoping she goes fully broody

HI!! Just one chicken? She must be lonely. Must be way out there in KS. Hope she is staying relatively cool in this heat wave.

She's almost entirely in the shade and I made sure she has plenty of water. I filled one of those big dog bowls with it.

and yea...it is way out there. About three-four hours from Wichita.

Not sure where you are in MO but a long drive out to rural KS. My chicks will be here this week. I'm freezing gallon jugs of water as I collect them to help cool down the coop and for them to snuggle up to in the hot of August and Sept. I have a freezer with not much in it at the moment. A big bowl of water she can climb into and get her feet wet, from what I have read it helps cool chickens off. Sort of like people cool your feet and hands off and it makes a huge difference.

The pieces for my siding are all cut and painted. Dang hot out there this afternoon in the sun to get out there this afternoon to put them up. Would love to have a few days off work right now to work on the coop in the mornings by the time it cools off I'm in bed as 4 am comes early.

I worked outside in the evening I cut the grass, worked on putting up more cattle panels for the fence Had to quit because it got too dark to see! Won't get anything done the next 2 days as I am babysitting my 3 1/2 year old grandson. We are going to go pick peaches in the morning.

Welcome to the MO thread! What kind of chicken is she, and does she have fertile eggs to sit on? What area of MO are you in? This thread has contributers from all parts of MO....
Good luck with your chicken venture!
