calling any one from missouri

I got my last batch of chicks at Cackle Hatchery in Lebonon MO. I wish I lived closer to them but they survived the USPS trip.

It's 2°F here in Butler county this morning, I'll see come sunup if my new vertical nipple water bucket is working or not.

I really would like to visit Cackle hatchery. It's probably a 2 hr. drive. We drove to Springfield to get those we have now, at Estes hatchery. 3 yrs in a row. I am assuming Cackle is a lot better it certainly has a much larger variety. I like being able to spare the chicks the trauma of being shipped, so we'd drive to Lebanon--- Cackle has Appenzeller Spitshaubens that I am interested in. @jthornton let us know how your water did, do you have it heated? Our heated dog bowl had ice around the edge yesterday morning.... dog bowl.jpg .

@jeria How are your birds? Is your coop all finished?

HI, Hope you are making through the cold spell, hope this is the worst of it for the winter as temps ease going toward the weekend.

Haven't been on the computer much for awhile overtime at work daily and too busy at work to jump on there. If I ever get the coop and run finished it will be party time! I boarded up the someday windows for the winter. They of course were secure with hardware cloth. It's been a year of fighting bronchitis and the after affects-- I'm tired of it.. Had the flu over the NY weekend and have it again, not official till the doc this am.

My chicks are amazing. 1 gave me a Christmas Eve present, her first pretty little blue egg and the 3nd EE her first pink egg yesterday (frozen and cracked) , nothing yet from the barred rock. I managed to get 3 edible eggs and had scrambled eggs as the my 1st meal of the year. The rest have been frozen even though since stuck home I've been checking them every few hours. I still have the roo but hope not for much longer, though I will miss him -- he is so sweet. None of them like gloves, they peck at them and the roo won't let me tough him with them on, So funny.

Will be on here later but have to get ready to head to the doc's and have enough time to replace the frozen chick water.

I figured I'd post this here. I am located about 40 miles west of Branson ,MO. We hatched out some very nice welsummer and I have 4 roos that we need to rehome. They are not with our flock and they were a month old yesterday are off heat lamp for over 2 weeks. I would like to get a few bucks a piece for them (cover cost involve in hatching and raising).
Sent me a pm if interested. I can't ship but can meet up if needed.
Thanks
Scott

I have always loved the seasons, but being my first year with chickens during winter I'm not liking it that much. It's me -- I just feel sorry for them. I have the heated dog bowls too and they are frosty above the water line. They do the job though and keep the water itself from freezing.

Congrats on your new years eggs! Where do you keep your chickens while building their coop?

Didn't know about Estes, I see they moved to Mt. Vernon this winter. Both of them are about a 3hr drive for me. I'd like to get a couple new RIR females in the spring.

Estes moved!!!!! Wow. They'd been in that old wooden building with the piano on the porch for decades. Old Mrs. Estes was still working there last spring when we went. They didn't really have a storefront, you just went to the counter and told her or her grandson what you wanted and they'd bring it out to you. We have actually bought all our chicks there and they were sexed 100% correctly.
Edit: We just checked their website, not sure if the move is completed yet. Mt Vernon is closer to us. What I liked about them despite their less variety was that I wanted 4 brown leghorns last spring, called Cackle and asked can I get them today? No you have to order them online and you'll be assigned a pickup day. So I called Estes and they said, sure, come on over this morning, no problem. Now that Estes is going to be bigger, maybe that will change.
There is also Heartland Hatchery, in Amsterdam, MO, up by KC, and they do traveling 'chick days' and bring chicks to local feed stores. They come all the way down here, not sure where else they go.
