calling any one from missouri

so many colors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, guess I’m a bit of an iris hoarder

You can blame my grandmother and a little old lady who’s house I used to walk by in town on the way to football practice decades ago for this...

...I’ve always been struck by all the different colors they come in...

...I like them all... but can’t remember which colors we have until they bloom....which makes it kind of a fun surprise, lol

... but my wife likes the more unique ones, so we have kind of a kaleidoscope of iris ... but I admire the clumps of all the same color that I see others have on fence rows, etc.

We have a few clumps of them here and there around the place but most currently live in this bed ...which is a bit weedy and neglected due to the wet winter keeping me from getting to it.

...I feels so nice outside this morning here in Swamp East Missouri.

JT

Whoa ! 24 ... yeah I think that’s what Jack put on his magic beans to get that goose back... :)

It’s overcast and chilly here... but I’ve been sitting outside all morning enjoying it....time to go get something done now though!

I went out to the irises, put a little stump under them, and soon had two hens vying for the chance to be the diva-- Sylvie the Sebright, and Rocket the top hen. It's hard to juggle a handful of sunflower seeds, two bickering birds, and a camera!

I just remembered...

... I saw this last night in the electric co-op magazine that comes in the mail, and meant to share it here:

Right, I saw that. Photo must be taken at a state park. We have Prairie State Park near here. We've photographed bison there in the past, but often you can't find them, the park is so big....maybe we could enter photos from previous years, I'll study the rules.

Thought I’d share some pics of invasive Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) in Missouri

This gets spread by birds and becomes invasive, I have it in a couple of places on our property and have seen it growing in a very remote ‘natural area’ on some state land along the river... so apparently it gets spread pretty easily.

I’m pretty sure I saw this at a garden center the other day, but I was in a hurry so I didn’t confirm that the wisteria they were selling was this species...

....In any case be cautious if buying a wisteria plant, to make sure it’s not this one...

Here are some pics from today... I’ve been trying to contain this patch for a couple years now... glyphosate ( Round up) does not kill the extensive root system... and I’ve been hoping not to use one of the harsher sprays due to root transference concerns.

It’ll grow in full shade of the forest as it chokes out trees... but won’t bloom there...it’ll bloom only in openings where it gets enough sun... but these blooms produce seed that birds spread

This is what it looks like as it spreads on the ground via a vine like root system

Some of the vines I cut to kill the canopy last year ( or the year before) where it was choking out a big black oak

Same on a smaller tree

Most all of this on the ground is new shoots coming up from where I mowed it off last year

Here are two larger vines that I missed previously... they have climbed up and are choking a sapling

Same here, it killed this sapling and used it to climb into the canopy of a larger tree

we have a very invasive vine here called Japanese honeysuckle. It has white sweet smelling flowers. It also is choking out trees coming up in clearings everywhere.

I've been battling invasive honeysuckle on my property and we are battling it on the property at school too. It seems like a loosing battle. But I'm not giving up!
I will have to look for the invasive wisteria as well as those pictures look very familiar. Hopefully, it's not really here too.
I was buzzed by a hummingbird today when I was pulling weeds in the garden early this evening!! They always seem to come check out my Cardinals baseball cap. :lau
I saw one yesterday checking out the blooms on the invasive honeysuckle by the garage. So far, I haven't seen any near the hummingbird feeder.:idunno I'm going to change out the food tomorrow.:hugs
So far, next week looks like it will have fewer rainy days! :wee Maybe the ground in the chicken yard will finally dry out!

@karenerwin

I don’t know how you knew, but you were right when you said I’d probaly get one or two more to hatch....

I ended up with 3... all of the Faverolle eggs were clears, and a couple of the Ameraucana eggs were quitters.

I bought some buff orps and gold laced Wyandotte chicks at the farm store (they came from Welp hatchery in Iowa) to try and give to one of the broodies so she’d have some chicks too....

...and long story short the broody that hatched the chicks and was kicking chicks out of the nest ended up with all of them... 11 total... and she’s doing great...

I think the primary hatch issue besides the Faverolle eggs not being fertile for some reason... was the nest boxes I gave them were a bit cramped and didn’t let them cover the eggs well ... also the other hens getting in with them to lay...

Live and learn I suppose
