Chickie notified eggs shipped! Asked her to let a couple of her FBCMs slip in too.
Are you breaking down and buying another bator for yours?
I've got a broody scovie picked out who gets the honors here.
Your DH hates me all ready dosen't he! LOL!

I have 2 bators going now as it is. Do I really want to add a 3rd???? Ummmmm NO! LOL Watching 2 makes me nervous! Nothing here has ever been broody, so I am on my own, unless I want to set some....LOL And I havent mentioned you to hubby yet, so you are safe for now!

(smile) Chickenlittle was talking about having to get another bator with those silkieds.

It could be worse. Could be getting buttloads of scovies to act as broodies....

I don't have bator 1 here (yet at least) BOs, BAs and BRs and all these duck girls are brooding everything under the sun for me. Plug and play the lazy way!!! Broodies tend to produce better results naturally and Lord help them, not dependant on my having skills!

My DH doesn't know yet! I have been looking around at all our stuff thinking surely i have enough things to build a bator and a few coops! Oh boy!! Just need the skills to do it... Hmmm... Told my sis about the LF silks and her eyes were as big as saucers! Lol! :)

Have a great wekend eveyone!!

Did you copy and send her pictures?

Oh, and when you're planning pens/coops for them - seems they can manage maybe a foot off the floor - fuzzy isn't exactly areodynamic.

Good selling point for the scovies when you break it to DH - let them do the heavy work.

EdenCamp,
did you get your BOs and BAs from a hatchery? How often do they get broody? Do you cull the hens that do not get broody?

The BO's and BR's I got from a local lady - farm stock for the most part I think that she's picked up here and there. Heritage and hatchery stock I'm sure - nothing highborn(G). All but one of my BA's are from Cackle Hatchery. Many of my "starter" chickens were. Honestly, I think they have pretty nice stock, seem to do well showing at fairs, 4H too. I have pictures in my albums. Didn't bone up on the standard, but very pretty birds. After a BO hatched some EE's for me decided to let a clutch of BA & BAxBO's build and see what happened. Young BA stepped right up for it. BR hen started brooding a clutch of duck eggs and won out over the scovy - so I loaded her up with EE's and CCM's and she's doing great!

Maybe I've just got so much baby mojo brewing out here it's contageous!
Everything is laying and/or brooding like crazy! Spring is here, even if the crazy weather isn't cooperating!

We just nattered on guineas nesting a couple pages back - but whatcha looking about?

How to find the nests!!!! LOL I mean I cant follow them all day. Is there any clues? Like will the males stay close to where she is laying? Do they normally lay a certain time of day? Ours have paired off and the 2 girls disappear everyday for a couple hours. Them bam as fast as they disappear, they are back.
They arent sitting yet, but if they do, they will be killed. We have tons of foxes, coyotes, owls, you name it

Just kinda have to observe where they are hanging. I do generally see the male in attendence keeping an eye on her or just not giving up opportune "alone" time. They are gonna lay a BUNCH of eggs before they set so you'll have time to keep your peepers peeled.

If you are going to get seriously sucked into chicken math might want to think about looking into a LGD.
I've got a pair of pyrenese, usually let my free ranging eggers range at will, the turkeys, guineas, geese ditto and only lost a couple birds in the begining while the dogs got the hang of it. They're even smart enough to look UP for owls & hawks.
