I would love to have a goat for milk. How often do they need milking? Twice a day? Unless they have a baby, right?

My sister milks hers twice a day but I've heard that it can be done once a day. Especially if you leave the kids on them. That's my plan. My doe should produce way more milk than my family will use so I'm planning to leave her kids on her through the night so I don't have to milk her in the mornings. I have a job and already get up at the crack of dawn to do chores before I leave. No time for EXTRA chores! I can separate her from her kids during the day and milk when I get home. Having the kids on them also frees you up if you travel or have an irregular schedule. No need to worry about finding someone to milk for you... just leave the kids on her!

I don't know of any for sale at the moment, but I haven't been looking either. Are you wanting a doe already in milk or are you looking to purchase a doeling or two to raise and breed for yourself?

My sister-in-law raises Nigerian dwarf milking goats, they live in north Texas and will ship if you do not want to go down to pick it up.

I love those pics. You should enter the one with the chicken on her in the picture of the week contest. I love goats milk. I grew up on a farm with Jersey cows. I has the head milker until I left for college. I miss that fresh milk each morning in my coffee. But due to a smaller space and the fact that I would dealing with the cows by myself I have believed it would be better to milk goats. It must be easier to move a goat rather than a 1 ton cow. Probably less getting foot broken as well.
I am very intrested in the pygmy nubian breeds. If she breeds any of those would she have two for sale?
My goat teacher taught that one goat is a ****** off goat. get two. lol

Thanks! I love taking photos. I have over a thousand just on my phone. LOL! Pics of chickens, goats, horses, dogs, kittens.... mostly animals. You'd never guess I actually have kids and a grandson by looking at my photos. I'm pathetic.

I've never milked a cow, never owned a cow. One of the few animals I really don't know much about. My dad raised hogs and horses, my mom had dogs and goats, and of course chickens! My sister's goats get bred each year... can't have milk without having kids. She generally sells most of them and only keeps one occasionally to be a new milker. She has lovely goats. I actually got my doe from her because I tried milking one of my medium sized goats and had such a hard time getting a hold of her teats... they were so small! I've always wondered how folks manage to milk the pint sized breeds. Do they do it by hand or do they use an automated milker?? The black goat I posted the picture of is half pygmy. She's the sweetest thing and such a good momma... but there's no way I could milk her.

Don't feel bad. I'm in the same boat with horses. I couldn't tell you much about horses expect I've been told that getting a drug habit is cheaper to maintain. I've also raised hogs, but I don't want to do that again. Bacon's not worth dealing with smelly, ground destroying, and human eyed creatures that can eat you. I'll never forgot my sister-in-laws face when I explained the dangers of letting a pig getting you down and citing the scene from the Wizard of Oz when Dorthey falls in the pig pen and they all freak out. I've never had a problem with milking, but I've read that a good pygmy has large teats, which for its size would probably make it about medium size. I took a good look at your sisters facebook page. She's got a good looking line. Are the kids pictured in the latest post one of the ones your getting? If so, which one?

No, I got my little girl from her over a year ago. She's not so little anymore! In fact, she's the tallest goat I own. I swear her daddy must be part deer... she's got springs for legs! Her name is Daisy and she has a twin named Radar, that my sister kept. She started milking Radar this year. I decided to wait to breed Daisy because I didn't want to start milking in the colder months. I HATE being cold. LOL! She does appear to be pregnant but I'm not sure when she's due. All my breedings are planned, but after the girls that were getting bred to a different buck were "knocked up" I just turned my new buck into the pen with them all. So I don't know for sure the actual breeding date on several of them.

I've just been scouring my albums looking for a photo of Daisy... and I can't find one! I'll have to remedy that. In the meantime, here's a VIDEO of Daisy... the goat with springy legs. She can clear a fence like no goat I've ever seen before.

I'm hoping she's really is part deer and rare. That was going to be a little high than my fence if I get goats. She looks great, but she strikes fear into my heart in regards to keeping my goats in. I have heard that keeping in goats is like trying to keep in smoke, but was hoping after research I had got it figured out in a way I could afford. Now I'm left wondering if I could put a collar on them and use an underground fence like a dog or get them a superman cape.
