you can pull up the symptoms on the internet. The problem is that if you ignore the symptoms the first time around they come back a second time and with a vengeance. We have all kinds of ticks on my place, that is one of the reasons I raise chickens. Guineas would be better but I don't like them as much, maybe next year. Lyme disease is spread by the deer tick, the smallest of them all and impossible for me to see without strong glasses.

My hens are fired. I have at least 5 that should be laying. I got one egg today and I'm not sure if I cracked it or what but it was cracked when I got it in the house. The boy child is eating about 3 a day and only getting one or 2 a day isn't cutting it. Not sure if they aren't laying at all or hiding them. Suggestions?

I wish I would have gone. The weather was great! I've never been to one. Is it indoor/outdoor?

There are a couple largish pavilions and all outdoors.
Go early. Even though it started officially at 7, people started buying chickens at 6 and most of that activity was over by the time of my 10AM seminar.

They're probably stopping because of the season. How old are they?
Most breeds will molt in their second autumn when they won't lay any eggs. You can up the protein a bit to help them build feathers and after they grow a new winter coat you can add a few hours of light to the coop to start them up again.

Hello just recently joined BYC but have been reading posts sense I started with my chickens early this speing. Im wondering if there should be anything I should know going into our first winter together. I have fourty eight birds right now and would like to see them all happy and healty next spring. Any information is helpful and much abolished. Also if anyone has any good solar products such as lights to extend day light i would like to know what to look for.

You probably won't need to extend the day their first winter. Most breeds will lay through their first winter.

The main thing you need to be concerned about in winter is keeping the water thawed. Don't coop them up. They need fresh air. They won't get cold.

I feel your pain. I have a dozen girls that refuse to lay. They are 22 weeks and I am about to start squeezing them to see if an egg pops out! Lol

I have 5 girls who haven't started but the ones who were laying aren't now. One is broody so I know why on that one. One tried to go broody but broke out of it when I moved her so figure that has something to do with it. Tiger might be molting but I'm not sure. As for DJ, Cookie, Scarlett, and possibly OJ, I have no idea why they aren't laying now.
