Hello my fellow Missourians!

I'm in Kansas City and am raising a backyard flock of 6 hens-RIR, EE, SLW, Dominique, Australorp, and Lavendar Orpington. We're maxed out with 6 chickens in our current home and setup but I'm scheming a move to acreage in the next few years, either around KC or possibly SW MO/NW AR. Glad to make the connection with the locals!

Hi!I'm at the fort in sw Mo. We are at 10 chickens and trying to get some chicks started under one of our hens. Any recommendations for making a hen broody? I just want chicks!

Hi silverbird, Welcome to BYC and the MO thread!
They go broody on their schedule not ours. It's hormonal. This is what I have always believed. However, one wise BYC member recently said to another person with the same question as yours, "you can't force them to go broody, but you can 'tempt' them." Nope, I only have a solar powered motion activated light on my coop. I love it & wish I had bought several. I tried to find more last weekend, but couldn't find what I had before. Instead I paid 2x's as much & got less than half of what I had. The new one is a solar powered motion activated deck light. Doesn't put out anywhere near the same amount of light.
