My chicken math has turned into duck math as of late....my parents gave my 19 month old money to "buy" ducks for Easter so I ordered five cayugas from a local farmer but then while waiting for them to have a good hatch I saw two Pekins at orschalens so they came home with us, then there were these magpies on craigslist that were so precious so now we're at five ducks, then the Cayuga people had another bad hatch with only one little tiny baby duck so he came home too and were still waiting for those original five to hatch too

OK laughing, sort of what I figured but wasn't sure if it also had to do eggs or something. I was originally thinking 2 but in the reading I've done 3 sounds healthier for the birds so it's 3 at the moment. Then it will be narrowing down what breeds and what are available here that are cold and heat hardy.

My neighbor received her 3 teenagers last night. Her granddaughter had me peek at them still in a dog crate in the back of their car. Couldn't see them well, will probably go meet them tonight as they were busy trying to get the run that has been used for storage for a few years cleaned out. Talk about not prepared. They were so dirty and smelled so bad, I felt terrible for them. GD said they had been living in her parents' bedroom and pooped everywhere. I need to give her this site info and maybe loan her my Chicken in Every Yard book that I read last week and will probably use a lot.

I ordered the Dummies book on chicken coops last night and will have it Wed. I've never built a building now I have a shed and a coop to build and they need to be sort of similar to look ok.

It frustrates me when people are unprepared for animals as it's always the animals that end up suffering. Sounds like you're doing everything right!0

It's not like this is a sudden thing, she told me a month ago about them. I'm worried about those chicks, not sure about their care so far knowing the irresponsibility of the DD toward her child.

My 16 yo GD brought home 2 adorable chicks with not a lot of knowledge but they had everything set up for the chicks. Her brother is making a coop in shop so should be done when the babies are ready. I've given her the link to this site and she has her best friend's Mom for questions who is a vet. she already had 2 baby turkeys.

Also, anyone who lives near Tower Grove Park in St. Louis, the Backyard Chickens In St. Louis meetup group is having a picnic this Saturday, May 20th from noon till 3PM. We are bring food to eat/ share, chicken related items we no longer need/use (to auction off!). If you live in the area, you should stop by and meet some of the members. Who knows, maybe you'll want to join up too! Plus, you may find something you want to bid on at the auction. Hope to see you there.

Hi Jeria, How is everything going? Have you decided on a coop type/style yet? We have to build a turkey coop. Our 3 turkeys are getting big and I want to have their space made soon. I am wanting to build something out of pallets, because we have a bunch of them.

Hi Karen, My GD has 2 young turkeys one has a foot that isn't doing to well, they think she caught it in something. She was going to talk to her best friend's Mom who is a vet. I haven't talked to her since Sat. I saw a bunch of pallets on Sunday in a tall dumpster, was wishing I had a small step ladder in the car so I could reach them. There are some coops in the coop section made from them. Those turkeys grow fast. Post some photos.

I'm working on a basic design on graph paper so I can figure out materials to start collecting them and buy a few more tools. My time off in July or August is target for building as I should be able to enlist some help from triplets and my other GS as baseball will be over (all 15). I've decided on 4x6 and am increasing the run size a tad to probably 8x9 to give me more space to get to the nest boxes that are going on the East side. Coops for Dummies was panicking me with the instructions like you are building a house! Lots of what seems like helpful things in it.

A group in St Louis! how fun. Wonder if there is one here in KC metro.

Lots of driving to Jeff City and back for state high school track (6 hours). Lots of thinking time. I should have a coop plan set by next week and the coop and run built by the end of July. Especially if I can corral at least a grandson or 2 to help--I have 4 who are 15yo's ( one is currently building a coop started in shop class) to help build. I will be taking a week off work in July. Collecting materials and tools starts in the morning as I stopped at Menards to price materials.

I'm getting itchy to jump into this plan but not be stupid or not prepared. What do you all think about early June chicks? Will they be old enough to tolerate our winter? I'm thinking a rock (probably barred), an Ameraucuna , and an Easter Egger or Sussex.

Has anyone obtained chicks from the Stover Hatchery or know much about it? There is no informative website. It's the closest one I've located to me that I have found so far. I know I can visit Esty in Springfield to get late chicks. I don't want to have meet the minimum order number. It's too late for feed store ones.
