calling any one from missouri

I hadn't set up the hummingbird feeder in a couple years due to finding it moldy inside whenever I went to fill it. I had heard the mold will kill the hummers. But I noticed there were hummingbirds in the cedar tree, and I don't see many wild flowers, so I made some nectar. And we have a customer!

A baby swallow has fallen out of it nest on our porch. It's alive, I hope it's okay. I was planning to just leave it, but am afraid the chickens will find it and kill it.

I rinse ours between fillings ... and clean with vinegar and a bottle brush every so often...

... and keep them in the shade ... we have a covered porch on the north side....

...and the black mold stays away.

The only problem is the hummers keep multiplying!

I think I recognize your feeder as one we have too... with a square shaped bottle...

...I like it’s larger size and easy to clean design....some of the fancy decorative ones I’ve seen are hard to fill and clean.

Did you put your baby back in the nest? That’s what I do when that happens...when possible ...

... but I look for a cowbird baby in the nest when I do... as sometimes cowbirds stash an egg in another’s nest and then the cowbird baby pushes the other babies out...

I'm not absolutely sure if it came from the swallow nest I can see, since there is a parent sitting on that nest. And is it even a swallow? There are lots of sparrows nesting nearby. I'll watch to see who feeds it on the ground.

Robin is what came to mind when I looked at your picture... but yeah if you’re not sure maybe just move it up where the chickens can’t get it.... and see who feeds it...

Although it’s supposed to be in the 60s tonight... So ?

Found this little hummer body on the side walk in front of the dining room... there is no sugar feeder there.... just on the other side of the house...

... there was a bit of blood on his head that was stuck to the concrete... so I’m guessing he hit the window at Mach 4...

I guess it’s a wonder we don’t find more of them like this as fast as the zip around ...

awww too bad

awww too bad

Not really... I just asked around ... apparently his name was Triston, and he was a real jerk...

... all the other hummingbirds hated him and spit sugar water on the ground when I asked about him...

...one chimpmunk accused him of embezzling acorns... what would a hummer want with acorns?

...and the chickens said he cheated at cards... which is odd because all I ever taught them was old maid...

I mean really, who cheats at old maid!!!

Good riddance Triston!
