We have a propane furnace...but it requires electric for the blower. Everything else is electric. I’ll probably wire it so that I can easily switch it over to run off the generator for next time.

I put a main breaker outside so I could disconnect from the grid when the generator is running. My furnace and stove are propane. I have an old 2 cylinder diesel generator from a police station near St Louis, it is 3 phase but I just tap a single 240 volt phase for everything and have it going to the garage panel which is in turn connected to the house main breaker box.

Well the wife has started her sourdough starter... time will tell if she sticks with it. It was a bit bumpy the first day she made the initial starter a bit dry but hey you can't tell her anything so I bit my tongue and now it hurts lol. Today with a bit of coaching I THINK she is on board with the measurement of water and flour using the scale so they are equal.

@SueT did you start your sourdough starter?

I didn't start it after reading it should be kept minimum 70º...and our house is cooler than that, but I'll give it a try. I used to make sourdough bread a few years back, using starter from a friend, but haven't made the starter from scratch. I have found that King Arthur's proportions of 2 flour to 1 water do make it very dry. I respect them as the trusted bread experts, but in spite of that, I mixed mine 1 to 1 as I have done in the past.....
@karenerwin --what proportions do you use when feeding your sourdough starter?

@SueT The recipe I linked shows 113g flour and 113g water or are you going by volumetric measure? What proportions did you use? It did seem pretty dry to me but what do I know it's moving and growing even though the wife added more than 113g of flour to the first one.

I think a cooler place and it will just take a bit longer to get going. Put it by the stove...

First thing the wife said is why waste the discard and found this recipe for crackers. She is going to make some this afternoon... gotta be better than store bought crackers.

My sourdough starter really took off! I wouldn't have thought that my WW flour had wild yeast ready to come to life so quickly.
@jthornton I was going by volumetric. Now when I feed it, I just add enuf water to make it easily mixable. It gets really bubbly, but I'll do the whole 5 days before refrigerating. I've been setting it near the wood stove at night. I will try that cracker recipe.

I live about 10 miles from Poplar Bluff, Park Ave. is in the city limits and there are some real fixer uppers in that part of town. I'm not sure about the chicken rules in town but I just looked it up and from this page https://ecode360.com/28996258

Yep, the house he is getting definitely qualifies as a real fixer upper!!

We had found the same ordinance/code about chickens. I'm not clear if you have to have an acre (at least) in order to have any birds at all. He only has 4 chickens. I believe we can meet the 50 feet away requirement and the 144 SQ FT requirement ( especially if it includes the run), but there is no way he meets the acre or more of land.

I just saw the cracker recipe that your wife found! I can't wait to try making those!

I use a 1 to 1 proportion when feeding the sourdough starter. It's been working out real good for me so far. I keep mine in the refrigerator when I don't need to make bread. When I decide to make bread I take it out, stir it up, feed it, and set the jar in the oven with just the oven light on. That keeps it warm enough to do it's thing. If I just set it on the counter it isn't warm enough.

Monday morning my husband saw a deer laying down by our mailbox. It was still there when he got home and didn't run when he got out to get the mail. He told me about it and it was still there when I left to run errands. He said it had changed positions from when he had seen it first. I got about a car length and a half away from it. It tried to stand but couldn't.
So I surmised that it had been hit by a car. It was still there 6 hours later when I got home. So I called the Missouri Conservation department. They gave me the name and phone number of the agent on call. I called and left him a message. He called back in an hour or 2. He gave us permission to put it down. It was full on dark by now. I called a hunter friend of mine to see if he would help me gut it because I've only done it once before and figured that in the dark it would take me forever. He and his wife came over. My husband dispatched the deer. My friend gutted it for me. Today I spent the day skinning it and butchering it. I'm pretty slow at it! :lau
I was correct (I think) it must have gotten hit by a car. It had 3 very badly broken legs. My husband estimated that it weighed about 80 pounds, I'm guessing closer to 100. It was a little button buck. The little button antlers couldn't even be seen over the fur on it's head. 😢
We don't know when it got hit as we never heard anything but our house is quite a ways away from the road.
I'm glad that it didn't have to continue to suffer. We are going to share the usable meat with one of my son's friends that hasn't been able to get a deer this year.
All of this and this deer was still bigger than the one another friend got for me during archery season this year ( a young doe).

Thanks for the tip on the oven light, our house is 68°F during the day and 60°F at night.

Do you use 1 to 1 by weight or volume?
