I have a door on my coop and close it usually when it gets below 20 and if the winds are really fierce and the weather wet! Last year I had a problem with the Roos Comb getting black spots (Frost bite) so I started closing up the coop when wheather was bitter and below 20 i also have a red heat lamp to knock off the chill and believe me they huddle under it when they get cold

Right we don't get that much snow usually, but there are lots of acorns out there again this year! We had quite a bit of snow last year if I remember right...

Supposedly, there is a connection. More acorns = more snow
It gives the critters enough food to store up for the winter when they can't find anything due to the snow. I don't remember where I heard it but I heard it last year, and didn't we have quite a bit of snow fall? I don't really pay much attention to it from year to year. I'm not a big detail person.

tell me about it, We usually don't get snow that lasts for more than a day. Last year I know we had snow on the ground for more than a week.

I think so too. I hope we are wrong Ernie.

I went out to check on the boys and girls yesterday just before dark and everybody was huggling and squeezing in tight for warmth. I do have a heat lamp on one side of the hen house but they weren't using it.
It is there if they want it.

Yep I truly hope we are wrong too! I Have a Heat Lamp too and this morning at 5 they were huddled under it in a tight little chicken cluster! They are such little sissies sometimes Came back at 9 and opened the door and they went outside and roamed around most of the day but when I went back out at 6 tonight they were all there and the food dishes were almost empty! Looked like a Chicken Mutiny was about to take Place LOL!I hope this is a short winter they are gonna break me on food! They always have food available all the time 24/7 and I give them 2 lbs of BOSS A DAY plus green things everyday and treats too! Especially warm oatmeal on really cold mornings when I am home!
