calling any one from missouri

that is a good idea about the rope.
I cleaned the coop on Sunday, filled the feed and water and hoping for the best.
my kids are off school tomorrow, I should have bought some wine at the store with the milk.

12" on top of ice, ugh

This is a first-blizzard warnings for central MO. One channel is saying 20 inches for us. School was called early so we came home and spent an hour getting the birds ready. Added two bails of straw, fresh water, food and an extra tarp for the chicken tractor (all for one bully rooster). I even had my son close the chicken entry door cause of the wind threat. It could possibly have a foot of snow in the house if the wind were to blow the right way.

I mentioned the idea of the rope to my husband and he thought I was nuts. He said "What do you think this is- Little House on the Prairie?"

Stay safe everyone. Let's hope we can post updates and we don't lose power.

I went out this morning and the snow is flying! wind is only 6 mph right now but it is going to get worse! We closed the windows and doors up on the hen houses and filled up the feed and water.
The girls are doing good and actually laid pretty good this morning. will check again later.
McDonalds in Moberly is closed! They dont close for anything!

My coop walls are made from privacy fencing. The small gaps bewteen boards has worked excellent as ventilation thru each season thus far. Today I will be attaching flattened cardboard boxes to the outside of my coop walls to cover over the gaps and add insulation. My hope with this is that if any moisture does build the cardboard will absorb it vs a tarp which will not. I am concerned about frost bite. Does anyone have any experience in using cardboard vs tarps in their winter insulation? Do you think this will be effective?

You all sound as if you are getting hit harder than we are here in the south west corner of the state. I am about an hour away from the AR and OK borders. About 1:30 it was raining and then again at 3:30 I heard it again. Got up to snow falling from the north but at 9:16 I can still see the grass through what snow is on the ground. I hope and pray this isn't as bad as what they are predicting for ALL of us.
Lock on the chicken house was hard to open but finally got into the house with the girls and they are all upset since I was over an hour late giving them their corn. I opened one of the doors on the east side but some of the girls just looked out and went the other way. So closed it back and they will be staying in the house all day. Did find a couple of eggs already so guess they aren't that cold. I wasn't even that cold inside but coming back out and trying to walk back to the house facing the snow was no fun.
Please everyone be very careful out there but make sure all your chicks are well taken care of.

Shivershivershiver somebody just shoot me now.

Pretty dang cold out there... we've been battening down the hatches all morning. Still need to stick some fresh bedding in the coop, but I came in to thaw my face.
Horse and cows are in the neighbor's barn, mama and baby goats are in the wood shed with a heat lamp, and the still-pregnant goats and sheep have a nice duck-shed-turned-shelter and a tarp. Best we can do for now.

Went to check on chickens this morning and their water was froze. We run a drop cord in the winter for light and heated water and I think the ice must have tripped the breaker. Got it fixed though so in a few hours the water should thaw. Added fresh water on top of ice.

Getting back to the house is tricky cause its downhill. Did some unintentional downhill skiing a couple of times. The ice under the snow makes it quite trecherous.

We have maybe an inch or so of snow on the ground right now. Its really blowing though. Lord only knows when we will go back to school.

We are about an hour south of StL. we have a little ice. I stapled plastic layena bags over the wire side of the small polish house. Idiot roo HiHo started displaying to the hen on the bag. dumbest bird ever

Mt Vernon Mo about 30 miles west of Springfield had layer of sleet early am and now have about 6 inches snow on top of that and blowing like crazy and drifting of course. Just looked out and the sun smiled about 5 seconds and now getting darker again. SAfe as long as the power stays on.

Ruthless, you aren't that far from me...Marionville. We didn't have much snow till about an hour ago and then it really started blowing. Went down to the chicken house to gather eggs and check on them. They are fine and laying like normal. When I came out of the chicken house it was all white and I couldn't see my tracks from a few minutes ago. Wish I would have done the rope thing like mentioned earlier. Hope this lets up sometime today and we are just a little inconvenienced. Stay safe and stay warm.
