Calling on Dog Experts - Guess the breed [IMG HEAVY]

i vote pit/german shep
occaisionally i stand my pitties floppy ears up (just to be a dope) i think it is very similar to your baby. he is a staffie with papers, from some where in virginia. he was my first pit rescue (but not first rescue) and i drove to virginia from east long island to save him! just like potato chips ya cant have just one! great dogs, as are shepards.
good luck with her!

Does she ever cross her front legs when she is laying down? like a regal dog? and, does she ever puff her cheeks out right behind her nose area? Then theres that little wrinkly thing in her forhead that makes her look worried and cute.?

I can't see lab at all. I could see pit in there though.

Some pictures I would say pitt mix and others maybe not. She looks short so she must have some smaller breed in her. You are thinking a hound so maybe a beagle? I can't really see it but it would have to be a small hound if it is a hound. Plus I am not so sure a hound would be so well behaved around your chickens, but you never know. Maybe a cattle dog? that might explain the herding tendencies short coat and big ears. I would guess no lab in her. I have a few mutt rescues that are hard to guess what they are, it is always something you wonder about.

I have an australian cattle dog (heeler) and I think she looks vaguely like the dog in the pic. Kelpies may have a similar look as well. The snout is too wide on the dog in the pic for a heeler and the dog is too tall, but the ears, coat, and herding are on track.

She could very well have Boxer with the GSD. That would explain the coat and the long thin tail. My Cody was half Boxer and the other half was some sort of retriever and something else. He died a few months ago at age 12, but see the body, face and tail here?

I'm so sorry for your loss. He was very handsome. I am leaning more toward a GSD X Boxer because of the way she plays... she does that "rearing boxing" thing with her front legs when she jumps up and pounces on everything you throw for her. She also does that over excited curl and butt-wiggle, expect she does have a tail so that goes whipping around like crazy. lol.

CarriBrown - yes she has spots on her tongue, but those are actually just "birth marks." GSD can get some spotting on their gums and occasionally on their tongues... it's not really a "pretty breed standard" trait...but I think it gives her some character - lol. As far as I know Chows tend to have a solid "black"/purple tongue...plus they are more fluffy... You are correct though in stating that Chow mixes tend to get the spotting as well, but they also inherit more chow qualities. I figure a GSD/Chow would have a bit more fur, but idk.

Now, the reason I'm asking what cross she is is because an issue has rose up. I didn't know that our town in general was a bit intolerant towards pits and pit mixes due to an incident that happened a few years before we moved there involving a pit mix and a child. I have now learned that anyone in our neighborhood who owns a breed of dog or a mix of that breed, that is known for aggression, home insurance tax goes up greatly (no exaggeration it's an extra 1K a month). So our new neighborhood manager or whatever the title is call is taking the power way to far and is digging up that case. She is a real nosey b*tch and rustled up all this speculations about Sabina's heritage (along with persecuting my neighbor down the street who owns 2 Dobermans). We have papers from her adoption saying she's a GSD/Lab and that's what she's registered as; but instead of just shutting her trap, she's boosting the fact that she has labs and that our dog has no trace of any kind of retriever in here and is accusing us of lying in order of getting out of paying extra! So what if she doesn't have lab...that's what the shelter said...it's not our fault. Now, all the pits and pit crosses I know have been WONDERFUL dogs so I wouldn't mind having a pit mix, but apparently I can't afford one if that's the case. I am getting so stressed over this! That's why I wanted to ask what other thought so I can either prepare or be some what relieved. Sabina has never shown any aggression so in my opinion this woman needs to back off regardless of what breed she is. Now my friend who breeds/and shows pits assumed Sabina was a boxer or some other working group or from the hunting or hound class before she knew of our issue. Her dogs are a bit more refined then the links to the pits I found online and still says she highly doubts she's pit.

We're going to look into the DNA test next vet visit... hopefully we'll find some closure. I just don't want to have to give up my dog.

You don't have to go to the vet to get a DNA test. It can be done very easily from home with a cheek swab (like a big Q tip) that you mail to the company (MME Genomics). There's no blood testing involved. It costs $60. They only have the genetic markers for 37 breeds I believe, but they are the most common breeds.

Having said that, i'd put money on her being part pitbull. It does annoy me that shelters don't want to label a dog as being part pitbull so that it is easier to adopt, but then the new owners run into difficulties with their neighbors/landlords/animal control dept.

We have a Black Mouth Cur, and I don't see any similarities to him. She reminds me a little of a Basenji, but I think it's just the combination of different breed characteristics rather than Basenji ancestry.
