We have had two campiens that have the same injury. one was about a month ago and the other we discovered yesterday. They lost their toenail. The bleed a bit and the nail is gone. I been real carefull when I built the coop not to have anyplace that could injure a bird, but who knows ? I have one thought that they caught their toe between the roost and the hanger supporting the roost.
Or, most of the blood is in the nest box I built, but there is no place for a toe to be caught there. Maybe they scratch the toe off or down ? I really do not know I just guessing
Still something is causing their toenail to be "torn out"
Has anybody ever heard of birds loosing toenails ? and any reasons why ?

i have a Brahma bantam that i bought this summer and noticed one of her toenails is missing she seems to do perfectly fine without it. From what i have read they could have been scratching at something hard of caught in mesh wire fencing
