Camping food ideas anyone?!?!

I apologize if I changed the topic from food to bear but I'm not really that sorry, you guys are totaly cracking me up!!

We bought cans of pepper spray for a hike to my Dads Alaskan cabin that has been hit by Grizzlies twice! He laughed his face off at us, said that's a great idea, only you'll want to turn the spray on yourself when you're bent over kissing your a__ goodbye because you have a 500 pound mother Griz coming at you at 35mph....

Too true!

Hey Gumpsgirl are you going to Shenandoah??

I'm hoping to get up that way before the school year starts or maybe in early Oct when the leaves are at peak. I spent 1 summer traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway from it's beginning up in the Shenandoah's to the end at the Great Smokey Mountains.

Check out Backpacker.com They have some really quick, easy and tasty recipes in the cooking section that backpackers have come up with.

We used to taking fishing/camping trips when I was younger. We always ate..."well" isn't he right word, but we ate good. As in, lots of really bad stuff..

Hotdogs were a given.. We'd do that at least twice.

My dad always did pork chops over the fire.

One night was always fish fry night.. If we didn't catch any fish, it was hushpuppy night.

Cereal for breakfast, usually...

Sandwiches...pb&j, balogna, etc..

JUNK FOOD...chips, cakes, candy, soda..anything so packed full of preservatives that it would survive nuclear holocaust came along for the trip. Ya know, because it didn't take up room in the cooler and was easy to carry... Yeah, that's it.

By the way...several high-quality coolers were required for even 3-4 days. You don't wanna get halfway through your ham sammie and go...ya know...now that I'm almost finished, I think this warm meat may have been a little slimier than usual.

My dad used to go on a yearly Fall fishing trip with some buddies he worked with.. They took little else but junk food, apparently..

Well, my dad's buddy Larry had apparently had one too many ho-ho's or something one night and was complaining that his stomach was pretty bad off.. He grunted and groaned and carried on for a little while, then got up and proceeded to walk over the hill.

What they heard next, I won't describe.. Use your imagination, if you want..

Anyway, he came walking back...wiping his mouth on his shirtsleeve, no less...and of course they were all like "You OK, Larry?"

He said "Oh yeah, much better now."

He sat back down, unwrapped a Twinkie, and went right back to eating.

True story.

If you are gonna get pepper spray for the bears you need to get one that is for bears. Regular pepper spray won't make a bear sneeze.

Macaroni dinner
1 to 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (you can brown this before and put in zip bag)
1 box Kraft shells and cheese (generic is fine as long as it's got the cheese sauce package that's not powdered)
1 can of corn

cook the macaroni, drain, add mac, cheese sauce, ground beef, and corn. Heat through and serve. If you prepare corn bread or corn muffins before they can be served alongside

How's this for dinner?

Etouffee

1 1/2 lbs of meat-cubed chicken, shrimp, or crawfish pan cooked in a little oil

1 big onion
1 big bell pepper
3 stalks of celery

all chopped small and sauteed in 1 stick of butter then add and stir in

2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 can Rotel

Sprinkle on about 1 teaspoon Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning and let simmer 10 mins or so and taste for spicy. Add a little more at a time if not spicy enough or only start out at half if you don't like it real hot.

Serve over rice. Have a great camping trip.

cheese hotdogs are fun to put on sticks over the fire and the gooey cheese just comes gushing out its delicious one thing that is hard to give up if I went vegetarian course I could prob find vegetarian hot dogs. Oh and sweet potatoes in foil over the fire with melted marshmallows and honey on top!

The OP said a group of kids were going. It's been my experience that a group of kids is way louder than any bells. Stick with the kids and no self respecting bear will bother you.
