Yup - 'cause everyone wants a share of those "free eggs" we're all getting, right?

More eggs to keep the neighbors happy, (once I feed my family with our basic needs).

I recently looked at egg prices. What was $2.63 three years ago is now in the $4.90 range.

I have 18 chickens and I go through a 50lbs bag every 2 weeks. They get treats including fruit and veggies and cracked corn before bed (more just on the colder nights than every night). I have a large family too so I understand not selling so many. But $2 where you are is crazy cheap compared to around here. When I drive around I see them for sale at $4 a dozen and if I look at Craigslist, more for the other farm stuff, they are around $5/6 a dozen. And the local grocery store has there eggs setting close to $5. I happened to take this picture to show my husband.

Recently My husband said is happy I convinced him to get chickens last year. I asked what changed his mind and he said organic Eggs are so expensivethese days.

We had omelets tonight since I had 3 dozen eggs sitting there. I’m sure the only people in America these days deciding to randomly “waste” eggs on an omelet just because are BYC keepers. Feel very fortunate right now…

I have 2 1/2 flats of eggs, thinking about pickling some, getting a dozen+ a day.
Also thinking as soon as I have a free weekend that I'm going to send a half dozen or more to freezer camp (two roos, as many hens as I can do before my back screams).

Oh, and I have a dozen in the incubator.

You shouldn't get them if you can't afford them

You could get them and get 3 bantam breed hens. That way it’s cheaper to feed/house and you can still enjoy the hobby!

My girls were spilling a ton of their crumble at the beginning. I bought a heavy rubber dog bowl and put the feeder inside. Anything they spill out now I just pour back in once they go into the coop for the night. I also put out two small bowls of wet mash first thing in the morning which are usually gone by the afternoon. The dog bowl below has prevented a TON of waste.

The amount of food waste in my house has also gone down to almost nothing. Only moldy/rotten items that get lost in the back of the fridge, coffee grounds, or green potato skins now, and they go in the compost. If more people owned chickens, there would be so much less natural waste going to the landfills…

I'm using coffee grounds to grow mushrooms - or trying. Supposedly, it works. My experience notwithstanding. Also good as a direct soil amendment/top dressing around roses, blueberries, raspberries, tomatoes, potatoes. Yes, roses aren't edible, but good for significant other. Its the only concession I make to non useful greenery on property.
