I've kept 2 roosters )plus several hens) for over 2 years now. One is an EE and the other a Buff Orphington. The Buff has been the #1 since day 1. The EE has followed the flock far behind, but is allowed to be part of the flock by #1 Buff, and occasionally gets to see some hen action.

All of a sudden, #2 EE has found new status and is #1 Roo. After 2 years, the Buff now runs from the EE. I live in Ohio, so they have been cooped up due to snow, my birds won't step feet on ground where there is snow. They have occasionally had a spat over the years, but we can quickly break them up and they go back to their normal pecking order.

Can roos swap leadership roles, even after 2 years in the same pecking order?

The pecking order is an ever changing thing. Once they start free ranging again, do not be surprised if the Orpington tries to regain dominance.
