It's a mystery over here! We currently have 5 chickens.
1 is in a crate, sick for a week.
2 are egg layers and laid a egg today in their nesting box.
2 are 10 week old sex link chicks.

We found in the dirt a soft egg today, right next to their water bowl. My husband thinks it's one of the babies, but I think 10 weeks is too young. But the older egg laying chickens know to go in the box and already laid a egg. And my sick one has been in a crate all week. is it possible the 10 week old laid a soft egg? Thanks!

It's actually probably from one of the two normal hens. The rule that a hen only lays one egg a day is based on the fact that a hen takes about twenty-six hours to form a hard shell. It's actually rather common for a hen to have a mishap and lay a soft-shelled egg "off the roost" as it were. Not something you see every day, but definitely not unheard of.

Keep an eye on the situation; laying soft-shelled eggs can be a sign of something wrong if it's done consistently.
