Can a barred rock rooster have an unbarred offspring?

Do you have a photo of the rooster used?

Yes. Here's a one-month old male chick that has a barred rock father and a red sex link hen...and the chick has no barring (odd color pattern, but not what I'd call barring). Too bad it is a boy because I'd love to see what he looked like all grown up and any offspring created (I'm probably not keeping the BR roo but am thinking of switching to EEs so my BR girls, & RSL girls will produce green eggers)

I have a BR cockerel and Sex link pullets that could give me these kind of chicks someday (Too young right now - Barred Rock just started crowing a couple of weeks ago, and only 4 of the 10 pullets so far are laying, 3 of which just started in the past week).

CGinJCMO, That is why I asked for the photos. I didn't see the parent stock in your sig. Frankly, I honestly don't think that bird came from such a match, but it isn't surprising that your friend guessed at the parentage when he gave the bird to you. I'm no genetics expert, but IIRC, Barred Rock, pure BR rooster must throw that barring to every chick. I just don't think BR over RSL makes that chick, frankly. It doesn't matter and I'm not being fussy for the sake of being fussy. If people have a few different birds in their flocks and hatch, they aren't always certain just which combination of what happens in the barnyard. LOL

Another possibility is that the rooster used appears as a Barred Rock, but simply isn't a pure BR. That is extremely common.

One copy of the barring gene could throw this chick. I have a reddish coloured bird from a rooster that only had one copy of the barring gene.

My girl has FINALLY started to lay Her eggs are relatively large for a pullet egg, and she is 20 weeks.

Here is Jaycie a week ago.

2 weeks ago - she's really big. Even bigger than my regular barred rock pullet that is a few days older.

Her brother is thinner than she is, and has really cool ghost barring.

He also has 1 random barred feather in his tail

This boy is 3 weeks younger than Jaycie and will be going to freezer camp this weekend.

Here is the youngest of the RSL hen x BR rooster. She is 11 weeks old. I'll be definitely adding the two girls to my layer flock.
