Can a chicken molt somewhere you can't see it?

If you mean can they molt and you can't tell they are loosing feathers by looking at them, then the answer is yes.

I have hens that you would never know went through a molt then I have others that look like they stood backwards in a windstorm, they loose a ton of feathers all at once and look horrible.
