Can a free range chicken get fat?

Under what circumstances do chickens get fat in an unhealthy way? Or do they ever? Occasionally I read about the possibility that free fed chickens can get fat. Is that right? Or is that dependent on their environment - whether or not they're free range, for instance.

a lot of my free range chickens are fat because they get to eat all the time. Only thing i can think of that makes them unhealthy is when they get so fat in the summer they have heartattacks/heat strokes. Corn. lots of it. will make your chickens fat. and if they get to fat. will stop laying. i've also had a few choke on whole corn. which is why i feed crack corn.
