My hen Clarisse, 3 years old, a buff orp, died. Background; in 3 years, she'd blow a few feathers a time or two, but never noticed new feathers. A month ago I noticed her comb was purple tinged on and off. I was going to treat her for something, but thought it was cardiac failure. She moved slower and slower. She slept more. I noticed new pin feathers coming in a nice dark color that never happened before. I thought she was weak from molting. She died.

Is it possible to die from molting?

Seminolewind,
i have never heard of anything like this happening before. i suppose it's possible but more likely she became ill because her immune system was down form the stress of molting.
sorry to hear you lost your bird.

Kenny. Thanks for the reply and welcome to BYC!

Rooster-Red, long time no see, LOL. Glad to see you post, even if I'm blind and you've been here all along.

I've read a whole lot of posts about hens that die and owners have no idea why. I hate feeling guilty thinking there's something I could have done. You may be right about the cardiac thing because a few months ago her comb was turning dusky any time she ate or walked around.
