Can a hen go broody during her first week of laying?

Oh - Sorry but it is too late in the year now Sandie. It starts to get cold in September here and we get frost , heavey rains and very high winds. Bertha the other hen has 4 chicks 9 weeks old so I guess Gerty was jealous. Though she would sit the eggs for a short time she never stayed. Just got bored and took off. Of course once Bertha had chicks she kind of got jealous then and took to the mice! Maybe next year?

I have a question like this too. My blue silkie is only about 8 weeks old and she is taking care of my sister's ducklings that we got about a week ago. She definately isn't even going to start laying soon, but she snuggles with them at night and lets them sleep under her at night, and they follow her around. Is it possible that she is already trying to raise chicks? Is it like a girl with a baby doll, or do the ducklings follow her and she puts up with them?

Thank you all so much for your responses.

I am not sure now which RIR did it, but one of them took the two EEs I had gotten at the same time as them, but were 3 weeeks younger, on like she was their mother hen for about a month, sooooo, I think at least one of them may go broody someday. But, I would like it a whole lot better if they all started paying their feed tab down a bit!

Just because they are my pets, doesn't mean they don't have a job to do.

You guys (and gals) are the absolute BEST Chicken people on this earth, bar none! Thank you again.

I had another thought on this as well: I wonder if she just stayed, because it was so close to bedtime for them and she was comfortable right where she was, so didn't bother to get up to go roost?? I know I'd need some rest!
