can a raccoon undo a latch or other door fastener?

This is a bit embarrassing

I honestly had never thought of it until now... I lock my chicken coops, but NEVER lock my front doors or my car. I even leave my keys in my car most of the time, even when at the grocery store

Guess my chickens are safer than I am!

Wanda the only time that we lock our front door is when we are sleeping or leave town
we live in a very safe area, but have wildlife
from what im reading about raccoons is that they are actually a long distant relations to the bear family
i did not know that
their thumbs are what helps them open jars
and other stuff

Honestly, I never knew where the key to my front door is. If I ever leave and go on vacation without somebody being around, I guess I'll have to change the locks so I can zip it up tight. I am right there with you guys though, my birds have better protection than my fam

I had a friend who had a pet coon. That little monster shredded all the drapes in her house and eventually did a nasty job to the owner's arm! They have a bit of an attitude. Though I agree a baby coon is an adorable looking little animal, some people forget they are wild animals.

I'm not beating up folks for keeping wild animals as pets, though I would never recommend it. I've owned my share of wild critters including whitetail deer and even a wolf. Even when born in captivity, they still have those wild instincts. Those taken from the wild and converted into pets, will often revert back to their wild side eventually.

As for locking doors... I doubt that there are many in this little town who locks their doors. Most folks here are hunters, so it's common knowledge that most homeowners are armed and dangerous.
