We used to have a RIR hen that was seriously confused. She would lay about two eggs a month and crow. She would cover all the chickens, hen, roo, it didn't matter. Her hackle feathers were mixed, round and pointed tip. She was the only one that attacked our cornish x roo, all the others went down for him.
And did you hear about the "guy" out in Washington (I think it was Washington)!
Course "he" lives near those Doctors spatcher mentioned
I know of a female red pheasant that developed male plumage once she became older, kinda like menopause for birds.
Actually he was here in Oregon....strangest picture of a pregnant man....but I kind of liked it! But that is just the cruel woman streak in me coming out
When I was 12 we had a ROO-HEN. She looked like a rooster, crowed, mounted all the other hens AND laid 4-5 eggs per week. I know she laid eggs because we penned her by herself for a month. We called her Herm. She lived for three years. Seems like she wore herself out trying to be both.
My "rooster" just laid an egg!!! it is the size of a pigeon's egg. I googled it because I could not believe my eyes, I found out that this happens very rarely. apparently when the rooster reaches maturity, it sometimes lays an egg!
