Hi! This Silkie chick is almost fresh out of the hatcher (first thing it did was walk through the waterer).

There was a fairly recent discussion on another site dealing specifically with Silkies, and there wasn't a clear-cut decision. The standards mention feathering on specific toes (leaving the impression the others should be bare), but apparently different judges may view it differently. According to some, feathering on ALL the toes is at least a fault.

Hi and thanks! I've never been to a 'chicken show', so it is interesting to know what is desirable. I have the ASOP, but that leaves much open to interpretation.
That chick has fused 4th/5th toes, but I've never hatched one that has completely feathered feet like this.
Even if it is contrary to standard, I like it!

There is something in the SOP that states

"Defect"
Too heavy foot feathering which usually brings out stiff feathering.

Page 170, last paragraph, 3rd to last sentence.

Okay, so what if there is heavy foot feathering that is NOT hard, but is nice, soft and silkie?

ETA, is the standard said that too much hard, stiff feathering was a defect I would not have an issue.

In MY opinion, there can never be too much

If all those little toes are nice and fluffy, not stiff. It'd be very cute! I've always thought more complete feathering on the feet looks better than just certain toes, but that's just me.
